    Question for Fast Food Experts

Was in BK today and apparently they were breaking in a new cook. Guy was taking forever and still messing up orders. After at least a 12 minute wait the lady in front of me finally got her stuff. Opens the wrappers to see both were wrong. Justifiably decides she wants her money back. Acting manager/supervisor gives the refund. 2 perfectly fine sandwhiches (forgot to add cheese) just sitting there. I mention I'll take em if they are just going to throw them away. She says they have to toss them. Is that the protocol?

It depends on the manager, a lot of times.

I was given three hamburgers and fries at Hardees once, because she handed me the wrong bag and then gave me my right stuff and told me to keep the other burgers..

I worked fast food for 3 years.. we usually didn't have a problem just giving it to someone else..

I worked at the Nation's highest sales volume Captain D's..

Yep, its all on the manager for the most part. We used to toss out everything at Little Caesars. We (the employees) weren't even allowed to take anything home that hadn't been paid for by us. Kinda sucks. Jack in the Box up here will let you keep the messed up order and give you a fixed one.

^^^ Cool. Just seemed a little crazy to just dump them. I was taking a shot in the dark. Did get a free drink for my 10 minute wait on "fast" food.

I hate it when places do that. I understand they probably want to prevent people from faking that the order is wrong then getting a free item, but if you have a competent person working the front they will remember what that person just ordered.

I worked at (as a crew person and as a manager) at Mc Donald's for about 5 years altogether. I know we had to account for everything that wasn't sold. We had to throw it away. I would occasionally make exceptions, but if another customer touched, you can't give it to anyone else. Drinks, fries, and ice cream I'd give away, since they're real cheap, but sandwiches had to be "wasted"

Also prevents employees from faking a bad order just to get free stuff...

We used to have to throw away the extra hot dogs and pretzels at the movie theater, employees couldn't eat extra ones. If they allowed that then all the employees would make sure to have extra hot dogs and pretzels on the rack so we could eat them later lol

I think in Virginia it's actually against the law for a restaurant to re-serve food that has already been served to someone and then returned for whatever reason. Or so I was told, anyway.

Yeah, places will never re-sell it once a customer has touched it.

Just also that most places won't let employees eat any of that stuff either.

Really depends on the manager. Keeps them from get sued by somebody claiming they got sick from a free burger. However I know in Chicago a lot of the managers usually let people take stuff home that was left over. Oh and it's not just fast food places either. You will be amazed how much food Walmart, Target and grocery stores throw in the garbage on a daily basis.

I also know on military bases, they just throw it into the slop barrel and the local farmers who was just outside that base would come pick it up every day to feed to their pigs.

I was a manager at Wendy's (12 years ago), and this is what we were told. As far as I know, it is a legal issue. Under no circumstances could we reserve food. I would always let the people with messed up orders keep the food if they wanted, though. If it was returned to us, we had to throw it away.

Yeah, as long as it never got handed to another customer, I'd give out extra ice cream all the time. It's so cheap, we didn't really keep track of it much, and giving people free ice cream cones is pretty good business.

We weren't allowed to let anyone have them due to sanitary reasons as they had already been opened.
