Re: Highschool Basketball Help
Just coming back from the weight room.
Disgusted with how weak I really am.
Could BARELY squat 205, could'nt even bench 135.
Luckily, I have really supporting guys in there with me.
My ego really took a shot down today.
But I did eat alot, I think.
I had two bagels and cream cheese, one Bacon, egg and cheese sandwich, and a turkey sandwich on a hero. After workout, I had a peanut butter sandwich. Its 443 now, bout to get some home cooked food lol.
Just do it.PSN: MajorJosephxComment

Re: Highschool Basketball Help
One of my high school teammates was 7' and weighed about 300 lbs. but was weak as hell. He couldn't even bench 105 and waited until his senior year to actually work out. He got down to around 250, still couldn't lift a lot, but he transformed into what he should have been at the whole time. Now he's playing D-II basketball. Had he trained his first few years of high school, he could have played D1. Don't wait or your opportunity might pass you by.Comment

We did that with our athletes over the summer, off season so not as to risk overtraining them during the season when you have games AND practice where your doing plenty of running and jumping already.
Youre in the off season already?Comment

Re: Highschool Basketball Help
I'll give you a heads up, but you're going to plateau soon. You'll eventually stop gaining weight and won't be able to add weight to your workouts. Your body is going to get used to working out and you'll stop progressing. View that as a challenge and push through it.
I don't know if you're doing your own workouts, but if so try to find someone that can design a good workout plan for you. That will help you get through plateaus and continue to progress physically.

Re: Highschool Basketball Help
My advice:
First and foremost, get TOUGHER. Weight training is great advice, but if you want to be successful, you need to get tough. It's a mental thing more than anything else. That was my problem. I was never that tough on the court and relied on skill and a finesse style game. If I would have had a mean streak to go along with that, I feel I would have been unstoppable. Dig deep because you have to find that competitive fire that just makes yourself a nightmare to guard for the opposition because you're tough. Sounds simple, but it's easier said than done. Especially if you're not typically like that.
If you stay as a post player, KEEP THE BALL HIGH. That was one thing that I did well and I rarely got my shot blocked. Grab an offensive board? Keep it high and go back up with it. Get the ball in the post with your back to the basket? Keep it high. Be thinking about your post move before the ball gets to you. Feel where your man is playing you. Baseline drop steps are absolutely DEADLY if done correctly. That's where instincts and smarts play a big part. Don't force it. If you're double-teamed, look to get the ball back out.
Hustle. Simple. But your conditioning needs to be there and that's where the weight training/cardio comes in. This was another weak area for me but it could have made all the difference in the world. How bad do you want it?
At 6'5", you need to develop some handles. Especially if you float and play on the wing a bit. I played on the wing, but it was mainly to catch and shoot on designed plays. My handles were never that good; average at best.
The more versatile you become, the deadlier you'll be. But as far as playing in the post, a mean streak, strength, having more than a handful of post moves and keeping the ball high as much as possible will make you tough to defend.
Don't think you have a lot of time. At 16, your HS career will move fast. Work hard now and reap the benefits when the season hits. Good luck man.Comment
