    Eating cookie dough question.

I was over at a friends house and he got into the fridge and took out a chocolate chip cookie dough premade batter tube and started eating out of it with a spoon. Is that safe at all? It says right on the wrapper not to eat raw cookie dough but people do it anyway that I noticed. Why does it say not to eat it.

I mean I can't say I haven't licked the spoon when I was a kid of cookie mixture and I love cookie dough ice cream so seeing my friend and hearing about others doin it has got me thinking about trying some one time I just wanted to know the main reason the package says not to. Is it because of the eggs or something?

Also do any on here do it?

    Re: Eating cookie dough question.

I have done it before a lot of times. However every body is different. For me, it has no effect. My wife how ever, it makes her sick and give her severe stomach pains.

Cookie dough is addictive, but yeah it is probably because of the eggs for why they say don't eat raw.

I do it all the time. I also eat raw eggs all the time (homemade mayo), you aren't even supposed to eat over easy eggs anymore according to the FDA.

Anyway, as far as safety, eggs in refrigerated cookie dough are pasteurized so it's relatively safe to eat. Reason why it says you have to bake it is for legal reasons because it's intended to be baked so if you get sick they have a fail-safe. Even things that are fully cooked carry similar warnings, like hotdogs and such.

I've been doing it for a long time and it's yet to make me sick.

Eat the cookie dough for the Pillsbury sugar cookies with the holiday designs on them and tell me it doesn't change your life for the better.

I remember when they used to come in one big log shape...I ate half of it and my grandmother baked the other half

I do it all the time. Sometimes I will get a stomach ache, but it just tastes too good.

I once got paid five bucks to down a cup of waffle batter.

It was worth five bucks to do it once. It wouldn't even be worth fifty bucks to do it a second time.

I don't make Christmas cookies, I make Christmas dough. Which then gets eaten before anyone else gets them. So no cookies this year I guess.

I'd consider it a waste if you actually cooked the dough, the cookies just are a huge let down from eating the dough raw.

                      Re: Eating cookie dough question.

I love cookie dough, but I haven't had any in over a year. Just wanted to let y'all know of this article.
Cookie dough may be one of the joys of the holiday season, but it's dangerous, at least for people who nibble it raw.
That's the lesson from a new study of a 2009 outbreak of E. coli bacteria, which sickened 77 people, most of them teenage girls and children. The outbreak was traced back to eating raw Nestlé Toll House cookie dough. It was the first time that packaged cookie dough had ever caused an outbreak.
Now for the next surprise: Food safety experts think the most likely culprit is flour. Their findings appear today in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases.
When people get sick from eating raw cookie dough, raw eggs are usually to blame. But a 2009 outbreak of E. coli that sickened people who ate ready-to-bake Nestle Toll House cookie dough may have been caused by a surprising culprit: the flour.

That was one batch in how long? Over a decade? You have a higher risk eating a salad in a restaurant.

Key part of that article imo. And yes, I do realize a second batch was found. As Burns said, that's two in how long?

I paid my buddy $5 to take a shot of vodka with a raw egg at a tailgate this year, money well spent

While you're not supposed to do it, I just can't help myself. I don't care if it's "bad for me." I'm sure I do a lot of other things that are worse for me.
