I can't believe I haven't been here for almost three weeks, did I miss much?
I couldn't use the computer much lately but I want to keep being active here again because it's a nice to be with good people. Three weeks ago I was far from home with a bad internet connection, despite that I didn't bother much because it was the last week of my holidays but those days weren't that good overall.

Last week I began college again and now I'm studying Computer Engineering. Last year I was on my first year studying another career but during the last months I realized that that career wasn't for me, I wouldn't take advantage of my strenghts (if I have some) and it required skills I really didn't have.
Now this university I'm going now is completely different compared to the one I attended last year, the difference between public and private is night and day. Now I chose my schedule, I've to arrive like 15 minutes early if I want a good seat close to the teacher if I want to listen and learn better, the system is different, here you're one person more instead of someone because of how many people are in the same class as I. I'm having some problems adapting there because I don't know anyone there so it's really hard to meet someone when most of the people there have already their group of friends before entering to college, the only exchange of conversation I had all week was on Friday at the bus stop when someone from my class asked me if I was going to the college party that night which I didn't even know and if I did I wouldn't even go because I would feel awkward there without knowing anyone specially because I'm not into that enviroment. Besides that I felt disappointed academicaly speaking, the teachers and people from there say that almost no one finished the career in 5 years as it's said, they say the average student finish it in 8 or more. They also say that most of the students fail badly on their first semester exams which worries me a lot because as you know I haven't studied maths and physics for more than a year and my three subjects consist of that, I'm considering taking those three subjects in a yearly course as they were suggesting for those who struggle with those subjects. Maybe I'll take the yearly course with those subject and then study something else like English so I can take the CAE exam and have a better curriculum or start another career in parallel like business administration which my mother was suggesting me (and also several vocational tests I've done) and it's a shorter career which could really help me in the future.
Also that Monday I went to my previous university because I wanted to go to a presentation which I was interested to attend. I found out that many of my previous classmates were there, they greeted and chat with me for a while. I really miss going there at class and being with them because they are really good people who I get along very well and were the first time I thought I really belonged to a group. That thought made me feel bad during the week specially when I was in class and seeing how most of the people there were talking to their friends. Looking at the bright side, I keep in touch with some of them on Facebook and some told me they miss me there so it makes me feel good that I had somewhat of an impact there. Now I wish I could adapt to this new place, to this new career and new people but I suppose it will take some time to do that.

Because we all know you haven't done nothing in life until you lived in Chicago.

You missed quite a bit actually. Gif hour got out of hand and there were consequences that are better discussed on twitter.

Also, cma1093 changed his name to Cabke and ryan36 is green again.

As for the public v private school, I know what you mean. I did my undergaduate studies at a small, rural private college and my graduate studies at a large, urban, public university. It's defintely easier to connect with people in a small private school setting versus the large public university.

So I'm going to get the memo on Twitter? That doesn't sound nice. Thanks for the updates.

The private school I went was quite good but the one I'm going now is another animal. I should meet people or something specially for study groups because I'm quite lost in Physics 1 and Geometry and Algebra 1 but how can I approach some random people when people are with their people and I don't have the same classmates in every class besides the fact that there can be 50+ people in the same class? I must admit I'm not the most social guy but it ain't easy.

Why do people tag themselves at their home, on facebook ?

                  A. I don't want everyone knowing where I live
                  B. I wouldn't trust everyone to know when I'm not at home or out of town...

Yep, see above, I wouldn't be surprised if half the OT posters qualified for that back in their day.

I really wish society would stop praising kids for their intelligence, it seems far more important to me to instill a good work ethic.

I was led to believe that I would automatically be a doctor or lawyer or successful in whatever I wanted just because I did so well on tests.

Work ethic is important, but it doesn't exactly inspire hard work in school, especially for kids. My dad always had me helping him do something around the house and I grew up with great role models for work ethic and I've got plenty of it today, but that never helped me want to do better in school...

Part of the problem with me was HS was too easy. We didn't even need to do our homework and we could still pass. It put the wrong message in my head. Instead of striving to be the best I could, I knew if I did the bare minimum I'd still graduate.

Employers don't want someone who does the bare minimum, they want workers who go above and beyond. In that regard, HS doesn't really prepare anyone for the real world. I think schools today just want to get their numbers.

I was supposed to have work ethic since I began primary school to middle school, I remember being one of the best in my class and always studying and doing homework, after that it seemed that I lost all the energy I had towards studying. My grades change were drastic, I couldn't concentrate during classes, I had almost no will to study at home and when I tried the effort was in vane. Maybe the change of school, the new school exigency level (it was the top HS in my city and the exigency was college-like) and the divorce of my parents affected my studies (that's what my family said to me) but I don't want those to be the scapegoats of my failures, now I want to return to my better academic days but it isn't easy for me to do that.
