TKJ is a great story for those who are uninitiated or haven't read it but its lost its luster over the years (i'm one of those people that think it's fairly good) for a few reasons: the controversial ending and the one event that had repercussions for the DCU for 20+ years. I'm actually a fan of the ending but I can see why some folks don't like it at all.

Another reason why the book has lost its luster is because the guy who wrote it (Alan Moore) has said in retrospect it's one of his lesser works so it's chic to pan the book in toto.

You're in the front row seeing Joker do this psychotic, crazy **** to try and "break" people...

And Batman is supposed to just stand there at the end and laugh? No.

I understand what the comic is doing and what it illustrates as far as similarities between Bats and Joker, but other stories have gotten that point across better.

I am kinda disappointed that it was a mild winter this year. I was thinking earlier that I wanted to get a hoody since I didnt have one, but realized that it will be spring in a few weeks.

Yeah though i've heard an interesting theory that lessens the rather uncharacteristic ending.

This is essentially a Joker story so even though Batman offers to rehabilitate him he doesn't trust Batman at all and by the end of it all Batman sees things the way the Joker sees it and suddenly laughs along with him not because he finds it funny but because he knows it's an endless cycle for these two. He'll always be trying to catch the Joker and trying to help him but something or another will occur which will repeat their vicious cycle.

It's not a perfect resolution but if you take this story for what it is and realize the POV it's being told from than I think the ending makes some sense even though it kinda invalidates the rest of the story in some way.

EDIT: Yeah I agree with you other stories have done it better and the villain where this kind of story works best isn't even the Joker! But IIRC correctly this was the first such story of its kind for Batman so it's groundbreaking in that light and also for the centerpiece event.

Just got home for lunch and walked my dog and sat down to eat. I fed her some of my left over steak and now she's too good to eat her dog food...

She's lucky I don't make her eat hard dog food..

Fellow Batman nerds, I'm planning on picking up a graphic novel this evening. Which one should I start with? I've narrowed it down between Year One and The Dark Knight Returns. I'm always open to suggestion though.

As others have said, Batman: Year One is a good one to pick up.

The Killing Joke is easily one of my favorites, though it's more a Joker story with Batman thrown in.

My favorites would probably go: The Long Halloween, Hush series, Year One, The Killing Joke, Returns, Death in the Family and that's all I can think of off the top of my head but I know I'm missing a big one.

I have a particular fondness for Knightfall, if not for anything its a hell of an introduction for a villain.All subsequent stories involving Bane have been sub par after that.

All I want to do is play The Show...that's all. I picked up the game at lunch, but my wife and I have go to dinner tonight at my father-in-law's so I won't have much time to play at all. Then, I'm job shadowing the box office at the Seattle Sounders MLS game tomorrow night so I'll be there all night. I'll barely be able to play this frickin game until the weekend. Argh.
