I've heard this "patience is a virtue" junk all my life. I'm happy to say I have no virtue, no scruples, and no desire to wait too long for anything. In my humble opinion instant gratification takes too long!

Injury
With their righting reflex theory, cats often land uninjured. However, this is not always the case, since cats can still break bones or die from extreme falls. In a 1987 study, published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, of 132 cats that were brought into the New York Animal Medical Center after having fallen from buildings, it was found that the injuries per cat increased depending on the height fallen up to seven stories but decreased above seven stories.[8] The study authors speculated that after falling five stories the cats reached terminal velocity and thereafter relaxed and spread their bodies to increase drag. However, an alternative interpretation which came out of internet chat[8] of the study would be that upon an excess of seven stories the cats experience a higher fatality rate which precludes the owner from bringing them in for medical attention. Although scientists in Massachusetts have recently discovered that the cat's ability to spread its legs out to increase drag when reaching terminal velocity would explain the decreased injuries sustained above seven stories because they wouldn't reach terminal velocity before then. Professor David Stevenson said "we simulated the cat's weight and size and found the terminal velocity to be 60mph which would more than likely result in severe injury or death to the cat when falling from this speed, but once we took into account the cat's ability to right its self and spread its body out this reduced the terminal velocity to only 53mph. This 7mph difference is massive and would almost certainly ensure the cat's survival. There however is always the possibility that the cat may not manage to right itself so this is far from a conclusive experiment and we do not condone the throwing of cats from anything".Comment

Re: Off Topic 2012
My fiancee does that all the time.
Speaking of my fiancee, if we don't have an apartment by the time we get out to Eugene, it'll be her fault. I'm alright with the apartment that's been heavily endorsed by my cousin, but she thinks it has no personality, and is not excited about it because of that + it has carpet. Honestly, I couldn't give less of a **** about it. Here's my thought process:
1. Can I put my bed in it?
2. Can I lock the front door?/In a decent enough neighborhood?
3. Can I have an office?
4. Is it close to work?
It fits my criteria. Hmmph.
She found a house that would have been perfect for her but we got in too late and now we gotta hope the two people that see it don't sign a lease for it.
So in conclusion: her damn fault if we don't have one and we have to stay in a hotel. But it's not like it's gonna change much, I'd still be paying for the hotel. Hmmph.
You should tell her that a couple's first home is always the least impressive that way she can live with the "no personality" until little GIGGAS starts running aroundMember of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: Off Topic 2012
She needs to look at the big picture. One can turn any home into what they want it to be. So tell her to always remember that. It isn't so much of what it looks like now, but what it can look like after you change it.Comment

Re: Off Topic 2012
I made my web page full screen trying to take a picture of a teacher evaluation, and now I can't figure out how to make it go back to normal. Probably a dumb question, but any idea how to fix this?
Edit: It was a dumb question, I figured it out.Comment

Re: Off Topic 2012
Major banking rant incoming:
Spoiler
Last week when I deposited my check the teller, in error, deposited it to my savings account instead of my checking account. This wouldn't be a major cluster **** if 1) this wasn't the first of the month and 2) I could access my savings account online. Apparently, accounts go into a "dormant mode" when there aren't any withdrawals for ~6 months. Considering its a savings account I find that asinine, but I guess its irrelevant right now. I can see my account balance and history, but I cannot transfer money to/from the account online. I didn't discover this until today, so I guess shame on me for not being more overtly thorough, but considering this is the first time I've had a problem with my banking balance I had too much faith in them.
The first time I called the customer service line (100% waste of time) the guy explained to me the dormant mode stuff and said that if I went to an ATM and withdrew money from my savings that it would be "reactivated" online and I could then transfer the money. Okay, cool. That made a little sense. I drove in the monsoon of a rain shower to the ATM and lo and behold I can't access my account there either. I return home and call customer service again and explain my inability to access my account. This guy tells me that the other guy was incorrect about going to the ATM and instead I will have to go to a physical branch and get this sorted out, which in this day and age of electronic based bank is completely ridiculous to me as a customer. So customer service cannot service the customer? Cool. So yeah, I'm a little peeved at them and unless they drop down on their knees and worship me tomorrow morning I will be moving my money to a different bank next week. Even if this wasn't rent/cable/student loan/all of God's kingdom's bills week, I still find it incredulous that I cannot access MY money and they are in fact limiting my access to my own damn money. I find it absurd and completely unacceptable.
So yeah. Now instead of getting up early and getting my hike on (which I am still stoked about because massive rain today = awesome streams/waterfalls tomorrow) I have to wait for the damn bank to open and deal with their **** in person. Thankfully the only weapon I own is a baseball bat so I will only be charged for assault and battery.

Re: Off Topic 2012
They've already done too much. Time to move your money to a competent bank that allows access to your money 24 hours a day online and at ATMs.
What if you have an emergency where you need to access a bunch of cash? If you need a tow at night sometime, a tow truck driver is going to laugh in your face if you try to pay with a card.Comment
