    Idiot alert

So I was leaving Target with a new tv the other day and a guy pulls up in a white truck says he's got a home theatre speaker system for sale. He said his supplier ordered too much. He shows me a sticker on the box that says they retail for 2199 and he has to get rid of them. He offers $400. I ask 200. He counters with 300. I agree. I pay him cash.

I was gonna get a speaker system anyway but after doing some research the guy was a scammer. They're cheap speakers selling for about 75 dollars.

These peaople work in Phoenix and Tucson. So I'm out 300 dollars and I'm an idiot.

A guy tried to sell you $2200 speakers out of a truck in front of Target for $300 and you didn't think it might be a scam or they might be stolen or something?

The old saying still holds true, "If it seem to good to be true, it probably is."

Even tho its still no excuse, I'm somewhat new to the big city. Coming from a tiny town in Mississippi to Tucson AZ I'm still learning.

If you come across someone who says they are from out of town and are low on gas, don't give them money. If someone tells you their car is broken down/out of gas and is just down the street, don't give them money (or a ride). Plenty of other scams, but those are two I see on a regular basis in parking lots.

I'm so pissed. I haven't even opened them yet. I want to sell them for what I paid for them but I would feel bad about doing it.

I'd tell you to report it, but it's not much different than what various retailers do millions of times every day.

What you're feeling now is what everybody that purchases a Monster product should feel. The only difference is, you realize you got scammed.

Sorry to hear that you were taken advantage of. But in retrospect, it could have been 100% worse since dealing with street scum is like playing Russian Roulette. Growing up a friend of mine was killed over a $200 cash exchange.

Just a thought: You can try contacting a local news channels and see if they would run a story on it. We have a local channel here in the Bay Area that's called 7 On Your Side. The lead reporter, Michael Finney usually does a good job of putting out alerts and/or sometimes will even try to recreate a rip-off.

Oh, and don't call yourself an idiot for thinking people are honest.

Your not alone, something similar has been happening in Atlanta to idiots. Just don't buy anything out of someone's car. You aren't going to be getting a deal 99.9% of the time.

If it sounds too good to be true …

When two strangers waved what they called deeply discounted iPads and laptops at a Lilburn woman pumping gas recently, she thought she’d stumbled upon a potentially great deal.

Instead, the woman had stumbled upon one of the oldest scams in the book.

The men, who said they were Best Buy employees, offered to sell her two iPads and a laptop for just $500, the woman told Channel 2 Action News. The encounter occurred two weeks ago at a Quiktrip on Oakbrook Parkway in Gwinnett County.

Apple’s popular iPad starts at around $499 but can run much higher, depending on the memory.

The woman, who didn’t want to be identified, told Channel 2 the men assured her the items were from the retailer’s overstock. She and her mother followed the men to their car, which was stacked with “products.”

After the women handed over the cash, the men sped away. The bubble-wrapped iPads turned out to be pieces of glass lined with black duct tape, and the laptop was a three-ring binder stuffed with paper, Gwinnett police Cpl. Jake Smith told Channel 2. He said the packages had markings that made it appear the women were getting the real thing.

“I was like, ‘OK, what did I just do?’” the woman told Channel 2.

                          Re: Idiot alert

Worst part is if it turns out to be stolen property, the police catch the guy, and he has shown this pattern of selling at that Target, you might be on security camera receiving stolen property. So you'd be out the $300 AND the speakers. Fortunately, the chances of that actually happening are very slim.

Anyway, first thing that would go through my head if that happened to me is "scam or stolen".

Aw, come on. I think of it as more of a PSA.
