I guess that makes more sense. I was thinking in terms of someone randomly seeing a bow and saying to himself "I'll bet that's stolen", but I have zero knowledge of bow hunting so that might explain things lol

Latest scam in Vegas is a dude claims to be your garbage man and lives just a few doors down from you. He gives a sob story about his wife being in a hospital and he would like to borrow some money for gas to go see her.

      1) you've never seen him before in your neighborhood.

      2) he's gonna ask a complete stranger to borrow money? Uh-huh.

      3) have you seen a garbage man's salary??

Oh, and my favorite--- dude pulls up in a pickup truck with a cooler full of "primo" meats ( usually Omaha steaks) and offers to sell them at a cheap price. Can you say simonella??

Had this happen to me at an old house. Guy knocked on my door, I actually answered (which is rare if I'm not expecting someone), and simply asked me if I like meat. I said sure, and that was all he needed to get his buddy to bring the cooler around for his presentation. Little did he know I had no money at the time so it was all for naught, not that I would've bought it anyway.

I see plenty of homeless people on the main streets through Pitt's campus. I also check the campus police media log regularly and there is usually about 1 incident of aggressive panhandling per week.

I've been approached twice since starting graduate school (though only once was on campus). Both times some guy comes up acting all friendly like he already knew me and proceeds to give me some long story which I could barely understand about needing money for busfare to some outlying area.

Now this takes place in a small town. There is about 10,000 people in said town, so that is important.
The bow that my friend purchased is a pretty expensive compound hunting bow that has a serial number on it. He purchased it from the guy who said it was his and he didn't want to hunt anymore.
Well my friend took it out to the gun club range to try it out when somebody saw him with it. This person knew it was stolen and reported him to the police. Since my friend purchased it in a cash deal he had no way to prove that he bought it from somebody and since he had the stolen property the police deduced that he stole it.
The judge was lenient and gave him probation.

That is the story I was given.
If that's the entire story...then the law enforcement/judicial system in your area needs work!

I can see possessiong of stolen property...but to charge somebody with stealing? I can't see that

            Your friend got hosed

I haven't spent much time in Oakland for almost 10 years, but the panhandlers used to be a pain in the rear. Often very rude and almost to the point aggressive behavior. You might run into some scammers as well; IIRC my buddy had the speaker van experience. Armed robbery is also fairly common, but doesn't get reported much of the time (personal experience and heard of similar incidents from several acquaintances).

Exactly what I was thinking. You can't do anything in a small town without everyone knowing. I grew up in a town of 3500 in the middle of the woods. **** like this happened all the time.

Its a whole new world moving from a tiny town to even a moderate sized city.

When I was like 18 years old outside a GameStop a dude in white van in the parking lot called me over along with my friends that were with me... There were boxes in his van all speakers haha. I remember there was a sticker on the boxes with the price was like 1500 or something and he said he would sell it to us for 300. We walked away, funny though how this still around like 8 years later o.O
