Yeah, I think the initial estimate where I live is in the 15 to 25 thousand range.

Considering my avg. lyte bill is (not bragging... yea, I am) is in the $75.00 per month range (68 last month), would it really be worth it to me?

I would trade with you any day. Here in South Louisiana my bill is around $150 to $200 a month during summer.

I'd say absolutely not. If your numbers are right and it cost you 20k, you wouldn't break even for almost 25 years. $75 a month sounds pretty good, but I don't know how big your house is.

Not huge house by no means... 3 bedroom, 1 bathroom, full finished basement. I've been as low as $ 48.00 for a whole month. It will probably go lower when my heat pump finally clunks out and I need to get a newer, more efficient model installed.

I got lucky though. House already had replacement windows, the doors are all properly sealed. Just goes to show how much you can save just by insulating your house as best as possible.

That and Duke Energy is ****ing fantastic man. I used to have AEP in VA, and they are a complete rip-off to their customers. My poor brother who is drawing unemployment has had his lights cut off 3 seperate times b/c he can't afford the $250 + bill they hit him with.

His house is smaller than mine, but insulation is not nearly what it should be. So if you're looking for a house project that pays off in the end, I suggest something along the lines of insulation type things - replacement windows (some people call them double paned I think?), sealing all outside doors, even window tinting!

We put in new windows and a new back door and I'm seeing a little difference this Spring. What I need to do is get some insulation for the attic. Only half the house is insulated there.

And I'll admit it...the other day when I picked up Max Payne I felt bad because I know that 60 dollars could have insulated one room.
Being kind, one to another, never disappoints.

I hate that feeling!!! Buying something not really needed and then thinking well I could've bought this for the house and it really needs it.

                    Re: Official Home Owners Tips

                    I need some advice.

I have neighbors that have become rather noisy lately.

I can deal with loud music and partying and such. That used to be me a few years ago any way!

But after 10 pm, the noise needs to come down. I don't want to call the cops, and don't want to cause any kind of rift, but my wife is 8 months pregnant, and my son will be arriving very soon.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention the ****ing beer cans in my yard. I let it slide (being Memorial Day weekend) for now, but it has turned into a pattern.

So, what's the best way to deal?

Such a touchy situation. I think, the "type of people" is one consideration. Another is what possible resistance will you face and what could occur.

I think the first best course of action would just be nice and approach the situation honestly. "Hey man whats going on, come see. Look, my wife is about to have a baby you think you guys can bring the noise down after 10pm?? We going to be struggling getting sleep enough at that point. Ohhh and also yall been leaving beer cans in my yard."

Most of the time you don't have to come off "hard" until after that first initial conversation. If it continues, then you gotta do for you and your family and just be a straight *** to get your point across.

That is my desired approach, however, me knowing me, I can come off as an ***. I don't want to turn into "that neighbor" b/c there's really no turning back from that!

That, and document everything. Take pictures.

Have something more than just your word vs their word.

Fences make good neighbors. The first thing I did when I bought my house was put up 52 sections of 6'x8' stockade fence. It runs from the left front of the house, around the entire property line and connects back to the right front. I also made a gate on both the left and right where it connects to the house. No one can get into my yard without a key to the gate.

A fence won't help the noise but it will keep people and trash out of your yard.

I guess it depends on your neighbors / neighborhood as well. I mean on one hand you have improved security and privacy and on the other if you over do it then it feels like you live in a penitentiary.

At my last house we had a husband and wife who were part of motorcycle gang move in and we were certain life next door to them was going to suck. Turns out they were pretty nice people and even though they had parties occasionally (only on Friday's or Saturdays) they always turned the music way down after 10pm which was great because we had a young baby at the time.
