Yeah, I'm not quite sure if I have anything that they may find valuable, or not.. If they were going based off of demand from certain regions, it wouldn't be bad, because I don't know of anyone around here who actually pursued the Coast Guard. It seems most are either looking into the Marines or Army.

Think about it and do your research. Just because you go to one recruiting branch does not mean you cannot explore the others. The few times I've been down to MEPS I've seen my recruiter speak with some people who used to be interested in the Navy but decided to join a different branch.
Take your time though, because based on my experience if they really want you they're going to speed up the application process for you, which can be good or bad depending on your level of commitment of joining the branch you're interested in.
I wish I could help out more, but right now I'm only in DEP.Comment

I was in the Marine Corps for 5 years...joined as a Reserve, but decided to go active duty and went full Active Duty 8 months after basic, which was coincidentally a couple weeks before Sept 11th.
If you're interested in travel, seems the Coast Guard would not be the branch for you. From the sound of it I would say you would be most interested in Air Force or Navy.

Re: Military Vets/Currently Service: I need advice!
I'm sure I'll have something, as soon as I've done some more research. I've been trying to learn all that I can on my own, without relying on a recruiter. I've seen, first hand, how crooked some recruiters can be and I don't want to have to rely on one to help me make all of my decisions.
This is all assuming I went forward with this. It's just an option I'm giving myself and something I've been giving some serious thought.
Make sure you are doing thorough research into not only the branch of service but the type of job/MOS you are looking into. I'm not a coast guard guy so this is speculation, but if travel is what you are looking for- out of the four branches I would have to believe the coast gaurd is the least traveled.Comment

Re: Military Vets/Currently Service: I need advice!
What standards are you comparing them to? I can assure you there are jobs in both the Marines and Army that have extremely high standards. The ASVAB score itself is also misleading, you need to score decent on the ASVAB, however your GT or general technical score is the most important. Some branches can be more selective in their recruiting because they are an overall smaller force and have a smaller turnover rate. The amount of slots dictates the incoming standards for those branches, not the other way around. The standards always change depending on the needs of the branch.Comment

Not to dissuade you, but if you want to travel, there's other options besides the military as well. There's Peace Corps, Teach for America, etc. Not to say the military can't be a great experience too. I never joined, but I sometimes wished I did. My father did 20 years in Navy, and met a lot of people, and has gotten to pass through the Panama Canal and be in the DMZ in Korea. That's cool stuff. But it's also very difficult at times, and he was very happy to get his 20 years done, and him not wanting me to join is one of the reasons I didn't.Comment

And is there a an age cutoff to join the military?Comment

Definitely do as much research as possible outside of your recruiter. Make sure it's something you believe in/ committed to. Too many people join the military based off of what the military can do for them and unreal expectations. I'm not sure what the deployment status of coast guard is or what their deployment rotations are like, but I would definitely want to know that stuff.

As far as other ways to see places, those are volunteering groups. The PeaceCorps is all around the world, and they do things ranging from passing out water, to building schools, to raising AIDS awareness. Teach For America (you may need a college degree for that one, but I don't believe you need a teaching certification) goes all over the country to help underprivileged kids do better in school. And there are a lot of other charities and whatnot that serve various purposes that help out around the world, such the Philippines, Latin America, Africa, etc.Comment
