Oh I know MEPS isn't a reflection of the actual military experience.

I'm just talking about my experience with it.

I spoke with my recruiter this morning.

I'm going to have to get another three day blood pressure check done over the weekend, but luckily my step mom is an RN and can fill it out for me.

Then I'm going back to Montgomery Wednesday and getting an EKG and Echocardiogram done to make sure there's nothing wrong with my heart.

Then they'll look that over and I'll come back the following week and talk job.

Some people go to MEPS once. I go four times.. lol.

One suggestion I would make is to think of your job very carefully. I may have missed it somewhere, but I dont remember what job you wanted to do.

Choose something that translates very well to the outside, so that if you dont like your time in service for whatever reason, you can have a much easier transition back to the civilian sector.

Dont let people fool you into thinking that as soon as you decide to leave service that you would be some hot commodity for job opportunities. Ive watched for years and years as friends of mine have gotten out only to find out that the grass isnt always greener on the otherside.

The transition back to the civilian side can be very challenging if you dont have a job skill that your average, everyday, moron can understand.

Re: Military Vets/Currently Service: I need advice!

I'm trying not to go in completely oblivious or indecisive.

I scored really well on my ASVAB, but I have no interest in any jobs that require the DLAB or other testing. I would like to do something with aviation.. more specifically I would rather be aircrew.

My mom and dad keep asking why I didn't want in the Air Force if I'm interested in Aviation, but it's simply because the Navy and water fascinates me a lot more.

I wish I had a better explanation of jobs and such outside of the Navy website. They sugar coat everything in their description of jobs.

Outside of aviation, there's not a whole lot that really interests me. Something telecommunication related sounds interests and fun, but at the same time it sounds like something I would start to hate after a while..

My gf's dad was a Chief in the Navy and he's been giving me some insight on some of it. I don't want a job that involves sealife where I rarely get to see the surface, water, surroundings, etc. That's why I'm trying to stay away from some jobs.

I forgot about that. I wish I had a copy of my ASVAB and line scores for each section so I wouldn't be wasting my time at looking at some jobs.

I'll probably send you a PM soon with a few questions.

About.com is about word for word what the military will tell you. Recruiters take that and sprinkle fairy dust on it haha.

I don't know if it interests you but if you have the ability Nuclear Power is the way to go. It isn't the easiest duty but that is why we get the big bonuses (I got 21,000 for enlisting and 89,000 for re-enlisting) and I know you want to see stuff and yes you will be working down in the plant a lot but I have met guys both surface and subs who have seen some awesome places in the world (It depends on whether you are on east or west coast but I have heard good liberty ports from both) and I have even met one guy who has swam in all the oceans in the world except one. The biggest thing for me is it translates well to the outside. I know guys who get out and make amazing amounts of money. The best part is that you don't always have to go into nuclear power. I have met plenty of guys who ended up taking their talents to conventional power making just slightly less than the nuclear guys in civilian world or even working with electronic companies doing maintenance. The training you get in the nuclear power community in the Navy is amazing and I know I am set for life because of the skill set it has given me.

Like I said it isn't an easy duty but it is well worth it, you can PM me and we can talk about it more. I feel like if you go in you should get some skills that you can use outside of the Navy, if you go and be an airdale that really doesn't give you much to do outside of the Navy.

Agree with everything in your post except what I quoted. You can make a very good living with training and skills from the Navy in the aviation community. A&P techs, QA FAA inspectors, and many other jobs outside can be qualified for from training while serving. I know many guys I served with who work for Boeing, MD, and other companies making a pretty darn good living. Plus, who wants to be a bubblehead

I had to get online and get printed pages on the meaning behind some of my tattoos, mainly the chinese symbols and lettering in some of them.

I have an uncle who served and was a mechanic (not sure what the actual rating was) and now works for a company making roughly $30/hr because of his background working with and on aircrafts.

You seem dead set for the Navy at this point, but I can help you (or anyone else) out if you have questions about the Air Force. Going on 8-years now...
