Be careful though. If you allow there to be an "inner circle" situation perceived or real, you're going to have a lot of headaches on your hands. It's one of the harder things to accept and handle properly when you're promoted within a company - whether you like it or not those relationships have to change (especially in how you act with them at work) to be an effective manager.

You should check out The Servant Leader by James Autry. It is a great read for any manager in any setting.

I go to work to make money, not friends.

Exactly. I had a difficult time with this the first time I moved into Management - especially with those that I was friends with that became my direct reports. Getting those guys to realize I was their Manager took time and caused some hurt feelings.

If they are your real friends and/or good workers, it shouldn't be a problem. Do your job and the friendships can remain healthy. If they try to get over on you or think they can slack off, then it's their own fault.

Gotta look out for #1. You seem like a grounded dude who wouldn't let success get to your head. The other guys are probably worried about that now. Maybe, hopefully, they'll come around.

Re: You find out who your real friends are...

I don't run into that in my job, we're actually happy for each other if someone gets a promotion.

This is a more abnormal, happy work environment though. We have our issues, but in general it's much nicer than all corporate environments I've seen.

I have seen this at my first job at a movie theater (lower paying jobs/people get this envy more I think. Still happens in higher paying jobs though). Someone got a promotion to manager and their "friends" were bitching about them and stuff.

Re: You find out who your real friends are...

I dont mind promotions, I just hate favoritism. Its found a lot where I work.

One person can take off for certain reasons however if someone else needs off for the same reason then they put their job on the line. Its not right at all. Our manager put his 2 weeks in on night crew and I want the position however they wont give me the time of day. Wont answer my calls, wont get back to me and when I approach them they basically say they will look into it or say their busy. Im the only original Night Shift employee left and have been there over three years.

Also hate it when certain managers can get away with cussing at a employee however if the employee cusses back they are basically in trouble. I heard them talk about so many people (Myself included) how they are "*******es, Idiots, Worthless, etc". Whats even worse is you cant say nothing or else you mysteriously get fired or written up for things you never did. I wish I didnt need this job.

Sorry about the rant but I needed to get that off my chest.

Sure. But you don't work in the same environment as me where your life could be put in another person's hands, and I mean that quite literally. Some of the best friends I have were made through my job. I get your stance, but not every job is the same.
