I don't know if things are different now, but I remember taking a test in 6th grade to see where I'd be in 7th grade, and I never even heard of the term "pi" when seeing about ten questions on it. I ended up scoring high enough to enter Algebra the next year, and I have flourished for the rest of my math career as one of the elite among my peers... but the fact that I hadn't ever heard of pi, or used x as this thing called a variable prior to 7th grade, might not be all that uncommon.

The most I ever remember doing in 5th grade was long division (with remainders), and maybe working with fractions that had uncommon denominators.

By the way, I'm on the west.

Pretty much this. If you were good at math you could have started basic Algebra in the 7th grade. I wasn't, so I took it in 8th.

I seriously doubt you were taking actual algebra in the 5th grade. And if you did, then it had to be the most absolute basic form of algebra.

I remember doing some very basic algebra in elem school at one point, like 1x -2= 1 or something. But yeah it was only like a week of that, I remember long division like said(My calculators now say F that)

Re: Can You Make It Through This Post Without Wanting To Be In 5th Grade Again?

Well sorry, my education was different. When I was a child we took these yearly tests called the Iowa Test. Basically it told you what reading and math level you were on. For me, when I was in the 3rd grade my math test scores and reading scores was on a 9th grade level.

Because of this my school enrolled me in the Paideia Program in the 80s. I was taken out of the regular classroom and put in a separate classroom with other students who also tested on my grade level. In this classroom were taught things on the grade level we were tested for.

So for 4th grade on through 12th grade when I graduated High School I was in this program. We did advanced things. Being I was in this program for so long, it seemed normal to me. Instead of doing child things about animals, we were reading Shakespeare and holding seminars on it.

              So yeah in 5th grade and 6th I had pre-algebra. 7th grade I had Algebra, 8th grade I had Algebra 2, 9th grade Geometry, 10th grade Trig, 11th grade pre-calc, 12th grade Calc.

Heck I was so smart my principal offered to skip me from 3rd grade to directly to 6th grade. But my parents refused and said they didn't want their son treated like a lab rat. But in the end I still was.

Do you know how it feels to be a freshmen in high school and have classes with nothing but Seniors ?? Let me tell you, it doesn't feel good at all. Nor does it not feel good not being to talk to your child hood friends that you grew up with because they weren't in the same program as you and didn't have a clue what you were talking about.

So in a way, I envy all of you. You had a normal childhood. I didn't. I was a thrust into a world of people prodding and probing seeing how smart I really was and how to best "USE ME" to further their own personal gains.

When I look back at the program, we were nothing but lab rats for Dr Adler. He paraded us in front of board members, recorded our seminars, our classrooms.

In a way the program got me out of the ghetto, but the price was me giving up my childhood. Hell I don't even know if that program is still around anymore.

I don't mean to toot my own horn, but for comparison's sake, here's what I had:

                    6th: Standard math
                    7th: Algebra (after placement test)
                    8th: Geometry
                    9th: Alg II/Trig
                    10th: Analytic Geometry
                    11th: AP Calculus BC
12th: AP Multivariable Calculus and AP Statistics

Like you, I was one of two freshmen in my 9th grade class. It wasn't bad for me at all. I guess since some of the seniors saw me as not geeky at all while the other freshman was a total nerd, it might have helped me somewhat.

I don't know if this means I had a "normal" childhood or not. I mean, in third grade, I remember being the times tables whiz kid. That didn't have anything to do with our curriculum involving anything near variables in elementary school, though. In 5th grade, I was saying: "What's an Algebra?"

There was no recess at my school, they banned that back when I was in 1st grade. We didn't change class rooms, we stayed in the same room all day. Our math was Pre-Algebra, which I never understood why they called it that because it was freaking Algebra. We didn't have art class. Didn't have a gym room, we had a basement, which also served as our lunch room.

Vast majority of our student body was poor so nobody brought a lunch from home. So I had no idea what a lunch box was until I was in high school. Book fair was a bust, kids was poor therefore nobody bought any books so after a while they banned that too when I was in the 3rd grade.

So yeah 5th grade wasn't fun, it was like freaking high school. Always had a ton of home work every day. Science fair was banned unless you were an honor student and even then it was elective. Because of that you had the same 8 or 13 kids doing it every year.

5th grade was also the year of many 1sts for me.

1st time one of my friends got shot.

1st time one of my friends got hit by a car. But that was his fault for running across the street in the middle of the block.

1st time I had a crazy stalker chick.

1st time I was robbed in broad day light waiting at a cross walk trying to cross the street.

1st time I seen how corrupt the police can be.

1st time I had a male teacher. Before that all my teachers been female.

Heh, I remember a good bit of that stuff.

Parachute day: I remember one instance where my gym class did that. The parachute we used was one where there was a hole in the center and I got in trouble for sticking my hand through it while I was under the parachute and had to sit out the rest of class. No clue why that was such a bad thing to do.

Book fair: I remember ordering many books from those scholastic book order forms. Oddly enough I still remember ordering my first Sci-Fi/horror type novel from one of those. Was "Creature" by John Saul.

Yeah, I had that Algebra prognosis test in 7th grade. I'd actually gotten the 8th best score out of all the 7th graders, but ended up struggling mightily in algebra probably mostly because the teachers weren't very good.

Back then, I wanted to grow up. WTF was I thinking.

Seriously though, those were good damn times, and I'm digging these nostalgia threads, even though they make me miss things.

In 5th grade, I was such an ***, always in trouble, Trying to be the class clown, because I loved the attention, and I had to make a certain girl laugh, it was my goal.

I remember recess I tried to hustle hard. LMAO I had my Pokemon cards, and I had my basketball cards. We'd make trade's for everything, that was my damn passion. I was probably pretty damn pushy too lol, Dude, Dude, what do I gotta do to get that Holographic Charizard card.

I'll trade you my Shaq rookie for that Vince Carter rookie, the hell I care, I had 5 Shaq rookies, and Vince was gonna be big. Hell one time, I got a card I wanted, by letting one of my friends wear my Iverson jersey.

5th grade was awesome, and I barely passed. Hey if they had a class for hustling or bartering though I would have had an A+

Edit: I still remembered my Conduct grade from the 1st semester F and then I cleaned up my act because I did not wanna get held back, and be grounded for almost all the summer.
