    Re: Community College Advice

Yeah nowadays, community college or technical schools are the way to go.

If I had a do over, that's the route I would go.

Luckily, I had a scholarship, so I barely have any debt.

So I've been looking at Dutchess Community College, and its extremely cheap and its one of the top schools in NY...

There's not a damn thing wrong with community college.

After two years, you transfer and get your Bachelors... It's all the same on a resume.

What they all said. Nothing wrong with a CC at all. I happened to be blessed with a scholarship so I was able to go to Syracuse for the same price as most CC's, but if it hadn't been for that, I would have definitely considered that route. If you can get a scholarship to get the price of a 4 year school down, then why not? But like you said, you kinda messed up those first two years, so if you don't get the scholarship from a 4 year school, starting off at a CC and then transferring is a good alternative. The majority of my friends went that route and they're all doing fine.

Correct. And as also mentioned, you save a TON of money.

No matter your degree, you can use CC to get your general ed requirements out of the way. Again, just make sure everything will transfer allright to the four year college and you will come out ahead.

I went to CC, have an AA degree in Social Science (LOL) and that has served me well in getting me along in life. I never could decide on a four year degree so never pursued a 4 yr college.

Going to CC my first 2 years saved me about $12,000 in tuition and rent. The fees are ridiculous. Actual classes are like $1,500 a semester. Then another $1,500 in fees and other BS.

Go to CC. They will offer everything you will take your first year of school at a university. You probably won't even get into PT related courses until your 3rd semester. You get to learn english and algebra all over again.

It doesn't sound great now, but you will be glad in 4-5 years when you have minimal student loans. When you are finally out in the real world, do you want to be spending most of what you make repaying the school?

Unless of course you are rich, then go to a university.

You say you're looking in the NY area?

May I recommend Nassau CC if you're in LI.

Easy to get your grades up and then you can transfer to
Hofstra (gotta promote my old school!).

Not only will your cores/electives be accepted for credit, although
you will need to do so more research on this but they also
have a great Phys ED program. After all, the Jets used to practice there!

If money is at all an issue, go the CC route. That's where I'm at right now and couldn't be happier.

You can take your two English classes, your math class(es), social sciences, and one or two lab courses for science. Just make sure you work really hard. If you don't do so well your first semester or two at the CC level, it'll really put you in a hole when it comes to transferring to some of the better universities.

                Best of luck!

                  Re: Community College Advice

I'm going into my second year of CC. I could've gotten into all the public schools in my state except for Texas, so I went CC.

Saves you a ton of money, and doesn't get you behind. You don't have to stay 2 years, my plan going in is that I was doing 1 year then transferring, but I didn't get into my dream school, so I'm staying another semester.

Make sure that you come in with the right mentality, you're not there to party or enjoy the college life, you're there to get to a good university. Work you butt off, over study, and everything will be fine. There should be lots of transfer guides at your CC, so go and talk to them. Make sure how many hours you need to transfer where you want to go. I had to have 30 hours to transfer to UT so I took summer classes right after I graduated HS, so look out for that.

Come up with a plan, follow it. Every time you get lazy, remind yourself of the goal. Know all deadlines. Plan ahead.

                  Good luck!

My mom went back to school when I was 10ish. She did 2 years at a CC and then transferred to Oakland University (they play in the NCAA tourney every few years or so, the Grizzlies).

Saved her money and it's no different than if she did all 4 years at Oakland.

You do need to figure out what classes will transfer to your target schools though, every school handles transfers differently.

Yeah, the only issue with transferring schools is making sure that your credits transfer with you. Community Colleges get a bad rap, but it's mostly good natured ribbing. There is nothing wrong with community college. There is however something wrong with for-profit schools. This isn't my thread, but I urge people to never, ever use for-profit schools, there's a reason everything is so shady with them.

I went a semester to community college before transferring up to a 4 year University(then transferred four year universities twice), and I would suggest as many have before I, that any future college folk here take there general eds at a Community College, and also give yourself some time to think about what you wanna do in the future.

Yeah, they're one example. They're schools that are operated as corporations rather than academic institutions. I worked for Ashford University, which is owned by Bridgepoint Education. They do just about everything they can to make money by offering an "accredited" degree in the least way possible.

ITT Tech, Everest College, Argosy University, and DeVry University are some of the other popular ones.
