The people that have been out of a job for a while, what about working fast food, stores at the mall, Wal-Mart etc... ? Those places are always hiring.

I've tried those.. can't even get a call back. I even leave my education off so they don't think they have to pay me more

I haven't been out of a job for too long yet but I do feel like I'm way too overqualified to work fast food. I wouldn't consider the mall around here an option either, this town has been hit so hard by the recession the mall is merely a ghost town now. Probably the biggest issue with where I live right now. Small, older population with very little opportunity and more room for death than for growth.

I went to a temp agency today to inquire about any further opportunities. Still have a couple job interviews to get to in the future, though. Gotta put on a show.

I make more money on my unemployment and can barely pay my bills. I'm not going to take a job making less money and not be able to pay my bills at all.

My suggestion is try anything and everything just because you think you're above the qualifications doesn't mean you can't do the job and get a check. With the way the world is headed I'd be looking for a job to bring in SOME kind of money because prices won't be getting any cheaper.

I figured that was the case for most.

                Re: OS Unemployment Club

When I became unemployed back in 2008, I decided to go back to college to get another degree. I already had a degree in English that I never used. I decided to go to a community college for a degree in computer programming and web design.

It was the best choice I ever made. I graduated in two years and now am a CPU programmer and web developer. I also met my fiance in class.

If you all haven't thought about going back to college, you are never too old to learn a new skill, trade, or career.

I have had thoughts about going back to school and have actually applied. All I have to do is send my old school (Saint Francis) $5 to send my transcripts over to Penn State so that they can review it. I kind of wish I would have never put down that I went there, though.

Unemployed since August of 2010 for me. Our company moved jobs to China from their main plant in South Carolina, and then sent our jobs to the main plant. Since they did that, I'm covered by the TAA program.

I'm in my second year of school for IT and will be graduating next fall. The program has allowed me to get an education free of cost and provides unemployment compensation throughout the training period.

I'm an E-5 about to go for my 6. I'm a medic (one deployment under my belt and it looks like my 2nd will happen next year) with a lot of experience. If you guys could just give me tips on what they are looking for on the outside I'd greatly appreciate it. I'll start working on it now to meet that criteria.

My situation is very similar to yours. I've been in 5 years and am also an E-5 and a corpsman (medic). I can get out in July of 2013 which I really want to do but the unknown of when I get out and how I'm going to pay the bills makes me feel uneasy. I plan on staying in the medical field since job prospects are usually good, but I'll need more school and certifications on the outside to get a really good paying job. The post 9/11 GI-Bill looks really good though and will be a nice piece of income to bring in but it won't last forever.

Lost my job back in December, which sucks cause I really enjoyed it there. Went back to school to get my bachelors, but man I don't know if I'm cut out for it. University isn't community college...I'm always stressed and even when I plan everything out I'm always falling behind. My video game habits def don't help either. Too much money invested in school but I don't wanna waste anymore either. I just want a decent job I'm not miserable at damn...

Was outta a job for a month in August to September. Behind on rent, insurances, phone... Worked the contacts and was able to turn around and get a job and also went back to making pizzas at night. A lot happier now, though I work more and earn a little less, I feel like I'm in a good place. Moving into my first apartment in the next couple weeks and just about caught up on what I owed.

Now I'm just working hourly jobs so my standards weren't as high as some of you guys have with degrees and experience and stuff, but it's been a bitch working out of the debt. Couldn't imagine a longer layoff, don't know how I would've done it.

It's tough man I swear I feel like degrees don't really give you a leg up unless you specialize in something. I'm 24 now but I feel like I could've had 4 more years of work experience that would get me farther...

The degree itself isn't a ticket to anything, but if you combine that with a wealth of leadership and relevant job experiences while you're pursuing that degree it sets you up with a great chance to achieve your goals.

On the other hand, if you're just skating by, getting grades good enough to pass, partying, and not getting involved while pursuing your degree then you're probably right about the degree not giving you a leg up.

The value of your degree also depends a lot on what field you're going into.

I think I have been out of work almost 5 years. I fell on some ice during the winter and messed up my back and neck and my Dr. won't give me the ok to go back to work. It sucks I hate it. I'm lucky I have a great wife and we can get by on her money, but I still do a little work for a friend on the side and make $200 to $300 a month. It's not much but it helps.
