Re: OS Unemployment Club

I will officially be out of the club on September 30th. I accepted a job offer today and it actuals pays more than my previous position. I'll be doing a little tech support along with software development, but I really like the company and they were excited to hire me. They do desktop development which I haven't done much of (I have more of a web ap background), but they are willing to train and let me grow.

Good luck to everyone. Things will happen.

I may be joining the club.

Told Tuesday that there would be mass layoffs, and I'm going to be one of them. I have until November 23rd. Hopefully that's enough time to get another job.

Just went through that last month. They're shutting down the entire Birmingham location and laid off around 400 people. They gave us a 60-day working notice. Completely shocked everyone on the site.

You'll find something in that 60 days. It may take 100 applications being sent out but you'll find something in 2 months. I've got 2 options right now just a little over 30 days into our 60-day notice.

Wells Fargo. Considering a move to either Oregon or with an insurance firm downtown.

              Re: OS Unemployment Club

I've been unemployed (and enjoying being lazy for once) for a little over a year now.

Sadly my military experience gives me nothing in terms of job skills. Everything I could do (which USMC infantry basically leads to cop or private security) I am pretty much precluded from due to disability. I get a little over 1300 a month from the VA, so that combined with my fiancee's pretty sweet job means we're more than covered... I just want to do something to pass the time. Being unemployed can get pretty boring.

Gonna use my GI Bill to go back to school (only did 2 years [no Associate's or anything, was too busy having fun at the 4-year universities] before) but am putting that off for a year or two until we move somewhere where we want to stay and there's a school I want to go to around.

                Re: OS Unemployment Club

I'm sort of in the club, I actually resigned my job about a month and a half ago to get ready for my first child. I've always been pretty adamant about a child being raised by a stay at home parent for the first few years; the way the cookie crumbled, my wife makes more.

My son is now 5 weeks old and my wife goes back to work October 1st. So up until now we've been tag teaming that little sucker. I'm pretty sure once she's back at work I'll have no time to get bored.

There's no doubt that I'm missing my own paycheck, both from a purely financial stand point and also a bit from a psychological perspective. I may look for a part time job just a few nights a week and weekends but for now my focus is purely on being there for the kid.

I've really been getting into more techy stuff lately, as far as a bit of programming and web development so I may look into taking a few classes here and there. We'll see how it turns out.

                One last little thing:

Life is not about our physical or material possessions, it is about carrying out the work of your soul - the pursuit of your passions.
— Kaya Wittenburg (@kayawittenburg) September 20, 2013

I think this little quote rings pretty true with me. I hope it can pick up the spirits of some of you guys, struggling to find work. Do things you love to do, the monetary aspect of the world we live in makes it tough sometimes but a lot of times if you pour yourself into the things that really spark life into you, you can often find a way to make a living with it.

I'm about two semesters out from having my bachelor's in psychology so you can imagine how hard it is to find a decent job with that. Nonetheless I enjoy the field. Come on grad school!

                    Re: OS Unemployment Club

I've been unemployed going on two years, and it's only getting tougher.

Sometimes I feel helpless and depressed, I've even broke it off with the mother of my child. It just pains me to look the two people in the world I truly love eyes and not be able to provide a stable situation.

I'm going consider the military, as much as I would hate to be away from my son, its just something I have to do.

I can't swim, I'm actually terrified to even try to learn, had a bad experience in my early yrs.

What branch should I look into?

                    What should I expect?

                    Thanks and good luck everybody.

I just got out of the Navy a month ago, and the submarine force is always looking for people. You only have to swim one time, and it isn't really a swim as it is get to the other end of the pool in some way or another. Boot camp was a breeze, and you go to your sub school in Groton, Ct. Stationed on Fast Attack you can expect to be out to sea a lot. Ranging from two weeks to a month, not to mention your six month deployment. You could also be stationed on a boomer which is a more stable schedule, three months in and three months out.

I was active duty Army from '05-'09. Easily the best 4 years of my life, not only career wise, but also personal.

I got a lucky duty station in Hawaii and was only required to swim one time.

Let's just get the worst thing out of the way:
Deployments for the Army are a year long and when you are at home, you will probably spend a month away from home each year training.

From what I remember, once your unit gets back from a year long deployment, that unit can not get deployed again for 12-18 months.

It wasn't as strict as I thought it was goin be. Def a work hard, play hard lifestyle. I'm single with no kids, so I can't speak for attached or fathers.

Tons of benefits for you and your family. No rent or utility bills. Free healthcare (their healthcare isn't the greatest thou)

If you stay in for 10 years, you can transfer 100% of your G.I. Bill to your wife or son.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

It's not my dream job, but I have bills to pay and mouths to feed! I've worked similar warehouse jobs in the past and I enjoy it. It's 12 hour shifts, with an odd schedule that actually works out perfectly with my custody arrangement. I can work when I don't have my boys and be off when I do. I have mouths to feed, so something is better than nothing. I'm just thankful to have a job in today's economy.

I would love to get into software development, any tips on focused areas of study?

I know a little bit of C++ (enough to make some simple windows programs). Dream job would be to work on developing a basketball video game. I've looked a little into Full Sail's bachelors in game development program [size="1"](I'm in Miami school is near Orlando)[\size] but I don't know if something less specific in computer science would be more useful when it comes time to look for a job.

Sometimes it's hard to balance dream job with providing for your family. I want to work on something I have a passion for, money really isn't that important to me. I don't need a luxurious lifestyle, just want to provide a stable lifestyle for the wife and new baby.
