    Identity Crisis

Is it me or is this upcoming generation lacking on a sense of identity??
Seems like EVERYONE follows a trend and no one is different at all

Everything is dumbed down, and everyone doesn't have a mind to think for their own.

Everything is just sad and so disgusting to look at... am I the only one that feels like this? Smh

    Dare to be Different

    End Rant .

        Re: Identity Crisis

Peer pressure and the public school system.

Everyone is so afraid to stand out from the crowd. They are scared they will be considered "unpopular" or "uncool" amongst the majority that they will all follow like blind sheep even if it leads to listening to Justin Bieber if everyone in their school is, or wearing super tight skinny jeans even if they are not quite fond of doing so. (not that there's anything wrong with that for the guys who do) Just throwing out random examples.

I think a lot of people are afraid to expose their "true identity" because it might lead to criticism and the younger generation don't have enough mentoring, to have the character, and confidence to stand up for themselves in a assertive, but yet respectful way. If you question a lot of people on why they are following a certain fad, they will either look puzzled and say "I dunno all my friends are doing it" or they will just get defensive and take it as an insult and proceed to direct profanity at you.

Not really sure where I'm going with this but this is just how I feel.

I understand what you are getting at. I think the problem is that the todays/upcoming generation are just people that are so used to having everything at there fingertips. They have never really had to work for anything or research for subjects. Everything is just a click away now. I honestly think that is the problem now with todays youth. Not trying to say everyone is like that it just seems like the majority are.

Edit: This was more of a response about everything being dumbed down.

This almost sounds like something you could say for all generations when they were in school. Minus the whole skinny jeans and Justin Beiber thing.

Yeah I understand where you're coming from. Not trying to pigeon whole everyone under one broad scope, because there are definitely a lot of strong willed youth that are independent people, and stand up for themselves, and their beliefs.

I would venture to say if you take a closer look at people like that they come from homes with strong, family ties. Or had close mentors that truly cared about their future like an Athletics Coach, Religious Group, Active community member.

I also see your point of living in a point and click world, seems like in the usual cookie cutter suburban neighborhood Kids are spending almost all of their spare time on Computers, Phones, TV, Videogames, iPad..etc. Parents rarely discipline their children, but yet buy them all the latest technology Phones, Video games at a whim and don't monitor their usage.

I always thought a child had to earn the right to receive a Cell phone, through hard work, grades when they reached the appropriate age. Now it seems like a lot of parents just hand their kids a Cell phone when they turn 10 and let them go wild. (Not trying to tell anyone how to parent their children, I just find the above example to be quite questionable and I see it a lot these days)

To be honest, every older generation says that about the younger generation.

Well I mean those were just examples that I threw out, you could replace those with a lot of things. Probably should have used different examples lol.

By all means if you like Justin Bieber, or enjoy wearing Skinny Jeans then feel free to do so, you should be able to do so without being criticized or persecuted. But if you are doing so, just to follow the crowd, or fit in you're doing it for the wrong reasons.

It is no where near the worse. It just seems that way because of 24/7 news cycles and instant internet at your finger tips. But the same stuff has always been going on, it just wasn't broadcast on a national level.

One example I see in my every day life is High School, Young adult Females, and their phones. Literally 1 out of 3 girls that I see out in public are attached to their phones, or so you would think.

I was at the Dentist's office for a check up, was sitting in the waiting lobby. Girl walked in wanted to say about 17 years old, as just opened the door I noticed she was looking at her phone that was in her hand. Fine a lot of people do so, she walked up and checked in at the Reception counter and she was staring at her phone the whole time. The receptionist had to ask her some information twice because she seemed to be paying more attention to the phone than her.

So I made it a point to kind of observe her from that point to see if she would put away the Phone. She avoided eye contact with anyone as she walked to sit down in the waiting lobby still staring at her phone, I mean I was reading a magazine so I wasn't just staring at her the whole time. But every time I looked up at her just was on the darn phone, texting or browsing. She actually got called by the Dentist before me, she had another Dentist within the Office they exchanged "Hellos" but even then as she was walking into the Procedural area she still didn't put the phone away.

It seems like most young girls are like this, I even see women in their mid to late 20's like this, They are also probably the ones that Text while driving on the Highway. I start to wonder, Are they actually doing that much on their Phones, do they need to? Are they doing so just to make themselves appear important, or popular?

Just something that kind of bugs me every now and then. I know phones are getting more advanced, and technological with each day and their uses multiply but that kind of behavior just seems overkill. I guess there truly are people that Can't live without their Cell Phones.
