Sounds about right. Wouldn't expect Buffalo or Indianapolis to be on this list, though.

Some things that stood out to me and surprised me:

      7. Birmingham, Ala.

Birmingham reported 1,483 violent crimes per 100,000 people.

The city also reported 85.3 forcible rapes per 100,000 people. The national average is 26.8 forcible rapes for 100,000 people.

      Damn.........That is a hell of a lot of rapes. 85.3 ? WOW

      12. Cleveland, Ohio

Cleveland reported 1,366 violent crimes per 100,000 people.

The city also reported 794.8 robberies per 100,000 people. The national average is 113.7 robberies per 100,000 people.

I'd guess that number is skewed highly by the fact that East Cleveland exists. If you stay out of that neighborhood, then you are fine in Cleveland.

No way that number is anything close to right.

EDIT: Just looked at the FBI data and got 85.3. Wherever you got this from just forgot the decimal point.

I got it from the FBI data via yahoo news. But it does appear to be typo when I look at the other rapes from other cities, nobody else is above 100.

                So it has been corrected.

Thought for sure Philly would be in the Top 10, unfortunately. Wasn't expecting to see Baltimore or DC on this list at all unless it's gotten worse and worse since the early-mid 00s.

Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse(not so much Syracuse anymore) are big Rust belt cities that lost lots of income over the years so there are huge pockets of depressed neighborhoods. There was a time when all three cities I mentioned were all struggling with really bad gang problems do the crime rate was much higher than it is now.

I think you misunderstood. I thought BR would be MUCH higher. You can't watch any local channels without catching 2 commercials a break about how violent BR is. Most of it is obviously skewed stats, but it's non stop.
