    This. I've been living east of Memphis since 2003, and the Lamar area is really bad. The area down by juvenile hall is equally bad or worse.

    Memphis is a rough place, but almost all of it's crime stats can be isolated to one or two zip codes. But in ANY decent-sized city, you should always keep your head on a swivel and just avoid certain areas.

    I'm from Seattle, and Rainier Valley/MLK area and White Center can be really rough. I could hear gunfire some nights back in the 90's.

    I'm a city-loving type, but more and more as I get on (I'm 45), I'm thinking a quiet place in the country where I have a lot of space between me and my neighbors sounds good.
