Re: Career Question
Do you have a place (i.e. your parents) where you can store some items that you want to keep but are non-essentials? I ask because it's really difficult or expensive to try to get everything down in one trip.
Also: checked bags are a REALLY cheap way of getting things across the country. 1st bag with Delta is $25, 2nd is $35, 3rd is $35. If you already have huge suitcases, fill them with clothes and other stuff you'll need and check them with you when you fly. Much cheaper than shipping or hiring movers.NFL - Vikings

When my girlfriend moved from Ohio to Colorado, she shipped everything via UPS, but she only had about 5 or 6 boxes worth so it was much easier. Very few have that option.
If you have a reasonable amount of stuff, like a U-Haul's full, like I said, the drive may suck, but I want to say I spent about half of what it would have cost to rent and drive my own truck vs. hire movers when moving from Ohio to Delaware. And you can tow your truck with it too. Saved even more when I moved from Mississippi to Ohio, but I had my parents helping then and they had a truck to tow a trailer. Didn't have as much either then. Someone I work with moved from Colorado to Delaware and drove. If you are doing it alone is where it doesn't sound as pleasant since you can't trade off drivers and have no choice but to hire people on the other end.Last edited by Redacted01; 03-12-2013, 06:14 PM.Comment

I have dressers, nightstand etc. but the more I think about it...I should probably just go to IKEA once I am in Portland.
I really don't have that much stuff:
-Clothes
-Racing bibs and medals
-6 pairs of running shoes
-Two TV's (27" and 32")
-Xbox 360
-DVD's/Video Games
Now, there is no way around needing to ship TV's across the country. If I am already shipping the TV's, shouldn't I just throw all my stuff in there?
Also, Portland is not 100% now. Of course, when I receive this great offer, I literally get contacted by four other companies in Chicago.Last edited by Kevin26385; 03-12-2013, 06:23 PM.Comment

Re: Career Question
Yes, I plan on leaving some stuff at my parents house. I really don't think I want to bring anything that is hanging on my walls at home. I have 7 Chicago Bears framed posters/newspapers that I will not be bringing along.

I lucked out. I wanted to upgrade my TV anyway so I just sold my old 32" on CL and bought a 46" when I got settled. My desktop is still at my parents. I'll eventually have to ship that. I just packed my xbox and games in a suitcase and checked it.NFL - Vikings

Re: Career Question
I'm pretty sure everything is weighed when shipping so it still might be worth it to bring some things with you. I honestly didn't dig to deep into shipping/hiring movers because of the cost.

I was quoted at $1900 to move my stuff and have the movers load and unload... ended up paying close to $3000. I'm hoping to get $750 to $1000 back from damages and charges I wasn't aware of.Comment

Re: Career Question
Kev, I was in the same boat.
I moved away from Chicago after about 24 years of living there, and couldn't have been happier.
After a short time away, with funds low, I started to miss the comfort of being around my hometown. Now that I'm back, I get reminded everyday why I left in the first place. I plan on moving again here within the next few months. Haven't fully decided where yet.Cubs | Bulls | Dolphins | 'Noles

Re: Career Question
This is such a hard decision and I appreciate all the responses. I just don't know what to do. I am crunching the numbers right now to see if the move is even feasible.
PODS just quoted me $2,700.
I have interviews with 4 different companies in the Chicago area. I will probably play the waiting game and see if I like any of the job opportunities here. I estimate the move to be around $9,000 - $10,000 not counting my college loans.Last edited by Kevin26385; 03-13-2013, 11:36 AM.Comment

Re: Career Question
Some companies use weight, others use cubic feet. I used USA Moving and Storage and they are horrible, so stay away from them at all costs.

Re: Career Question
Most estimates are based on what you tell them. So for instance, you say you have X amount of stuff. Well they load up and find out you actually have 2X. That's usually how it costs more than estimates.Comment

Re: Career Question
I had an interview today with a company in Chicago and I am leaning towards staying. Financially, it just isn't very bright to leave right now. Especially since I can still stay with my parents and just keep saving money.Comment

Long-carry fee of $250, $450 in charges for moving items containing glass and for using fabric rolls to roll the furniture, $300 for a shuttle because a 70ft. tractor trailer wouldn't fit in the apartment parking lot.Comment

Re: Career Question
If I decide to move, I think I might just try to ship everything in boxes via UPS or something and sell my two televisions.
I should be able to fly with my Xbox 360 and Laptop so that shouldn't be an issue. I don't have that many clothes and all my other stuff should be able to fit in a couple of boxes.Comment

Re: Career Question
I have decided to accept the offer and move to Portland. I ended up having 3 offers here in Chicago and after I left the last interview this morning, I knew my answer was Portland.
In terms of moving, I decided to just move my clothes and ship them across the country. I am going to buy everything in Portland and try to sell my televisions on craigslist.Comment
