    Re: Direct Tv or Cable

Pretty sure an upgrade for you would be 100% free. My parents signed up for the first time in May and somehow ended up with 2 HD DVRs. So they have no problem giving away hardware.

I am not sure about an LNB. I would see no reason they would not give you an entire upgrade of your system.

HDMI cables should come with each of your boxes. As far as boxes new members get the "Genie" which is a DVR that can record 4 shows in HD at a time, plus they get an additional 4 HD boxes that can play video from the main DVR. So you can watch your recorded shows on any TV.

If you've never upgraded a receiver before roadman, or at least if it's been a couple of years, you can upgrade for free.

Keep in mind, which it doesn't seem like it'll be a problem since you've been with them for 14-years, you'll have to agree to a new 2-year contract. Also, HD is an extra $10, and if you go with a HD-DVR, you add on an extra $7

If you get an HD receiver, if your dish has never been swapped out, you'll need a new dish. That's usually free, and I know for a majority of markets while I worked there, if you had all old receivers and you were in an area that was going to HD-only Locals, you get all your receivers upgraded free, as well as the dish.

Your best bet is to call because there's so many different scenarios.

Go read up on dbstalk.com about the installation checklist. If you have any issues, you can also post there and they will help you out.

Installations are better now, but most of them are still subcontractors. So they may not want to do the install the right way, just the fastest. They only get paid for each install and not how long it takes.

For signal issues, they can no longer close the ticket unless they have a signal above 90% I believe. So there aren't a lot of signal issues anymore for most people.

If snow is an issue, you can spray RainX on it before it snows to stop it from sticking and also use a water hose or squirt gun to clean it off if you can't reach it. They also make dish heaters that you can attach to the dish and it melts the snow.

Thanks that is a really good Idea. With everything that is going on we have decided to wait until the beginning of the year. We are definitely going with them just not ready for having people around the house and all in my daughters room.

You all have been really helpful and full of very useful info and have helped us make an informed choice. I really appreciate it.

For the record, do NOT spray anything on your dish to stop snow from sticking.

If something happens to the dish, and they find out you did and that may have caused the issue, you'll be stuck with a $60 Service Call (not covered under the Protection Plan), as well as the price of a brand new dish (around $100).

Sorry man but that is crap. If you paint it or something like that, then yes they will know and could charge you. If you put Rainx on it, they can't tell, Rainx doesn't leave anything on the dish. Go read dbstalk and you will find many suggestions about that. DTV participates there and have never said to not do it.

I worked for DirecTV. I know all of the terms and conditions, I know all the fine print. You should be told at the time of installation that you should never, ever spray anything on your dish or else you could be forced to pay for a new dish if something goes wrong and they can make some kind of connection.

If you call DirecTV and say "I'm going to spray 'so and so' on my dish", they will tell you not to do it.

Nobody of any importance that works for DirecTV will tell you to put anything on your dish.

                  Re: Direct Tv or Cable

We bought our son going away to college in August a HDTV. Of course, the 2004 receiver didn't even have the correct cable to hook up. We received a new HDTV for the family room and decided to upgrade to HD DVR and HD receiver downstairs.

Here is what happened that I posted over in the TV thread:

Spent nearly 2 hrs on the phone with Directv.

First they came out with 199.00 for HD DVR plus $99.00 for HD receiver, plus 3 months free HD service. I knew that would go over like a lead balloon with my wife.

Told them try again, and they knocked off $50.00 on the HD DVR. I laughed and said my wife won't go for that either. We both said no.

I was put on hold for close to 30 minutes, she thought I hung up. She finally t/t her supervisor and came back with $199.00 for the whole house to be connected. Pfft, how is the different than the previous offer? Plus, nobody cared to record off one DVR and watch it on any other HD receiver, ie downstairs.

Came back and said, best I can do is the $50.00 off the HD DVR. Frustration level increased and I said, better put me through to retention services now. Guy came on and said, I could do $99.00 for equipt install and knock off $8 per month for 6 months for dvr service. I thought my wife would go for that, but her deal was because we've been living in the dark ages, we finally get an HDTV and now, we have to pay $10 more per month? lol, oops.

So, came back, and the guy said, look, I can go down to $68.95 w/o tax on equipt, but I can't double dip from the extra $10.00 charge, it's one or the other.

So, we took the deal, $78.44 including tax, plus, they need to put up a new dish(he didn't think about that, said, don't worry, it's covered) and the near $50.00 off for DVR service for the first 6 months.

Not too bad, I think we walked away pretty good, but not sure why you need to jump through so many hoops to get what you want sometimes.

Because they expect most people to not question what they say and pay what ever. Knowledge is power.

Very true, and I've always remembered Matrix suggesting to go to retention services as a last resort.

                      Thanks for the suggestion, Matrix!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here is an added bonus for our area.

Directv is the only service that broadcast stations in 1080p. All the other providers in the area broadcast in 720p.

Cutting my TV bill was the best thing I've ever done. I don't really miss "live TV." I can still catch sports live online and get my fix of all my TV shows just a little later than actual airtime. With my family's busy life, it hasn't negatively effected us yet. The only bad part about it is that sometimes people spoil things on social media for us. (IE The Challenge ending)

When I lived in Columbia, SC I got rid of cable. The $30 powered antenna brought in all the expected channels. If you live somewhat close to tv towers I'd go to Walmart and "audition" a couple antennas. Start with the cheapest and see if it pulls in all the channels.

www.antennaweb.org will tell you what OTA channels to expect.

Had to get directv when i moved back to the "country" and away from the tv towers.
