Woman Pushes Man in front of a train in NYC, 2nd time in a month

NEW YORK (AP) — A mumbling woman pushed a man to his death in front of a subway train on Thursday night, the second time this month someone has been killed in such nightmarish fashion, police said.
The man was standing on the elevated platform of a 7 train in Queens at about 8 p.m. when he was shoved by the woman, who witnesses said had been following him closely and mumbling to herself, New York Police Department chief spokesman Paul Browne said. When the train pulled into the tracks, the woman got up from a nearby bench and shoved the man down, he said. The man had been standing with his back to her.
It didn't appear the man noticed her before he was shoved onto the tracks, police said. The condition of the man's body was making it difficult to identify him, police said.
The woman fled, and police were searching for her. She was described as Hispanic, in her 20s, heavyset and about 5-foot-5, wearing a blue, white and gray ski jacket and Nike sneakers with gray on top and red on the bottom.
It was unclear if the man and the woman knew each other or if anyone tried to help the man up before he was struck by the train and killed. There was no video of the incident at the station on Queens Boulevard in the Sunnyside neighborhood. Detectives canvassed the neighborhood for useable video.
Watch your backs people. Only a matter of time before people on the sidewalk start pushing people into incoming traffic.

I have always been paranoid about this. I usually stand right in the middle of the platform or with my back to the wall. Sucks to know that this fear of mine is actually justified.

Jeez....Well I better stop standing near the front of the platform from now on. I kinda like the thrill of the train coming so close.

That's an eerie thought. Imagine being the guy. Wait, don't do that.

Ugh, I'm going to have nightmares tonight. I'm now afraid of trains.

I imagine the conductor of the train will somehow feel guilty about this, too. How traumatic and disgusting.

Everything involving public transportation is stupid as ****.

I'd rather deal with traffic any day than immerse myself in those cesspools.

My question is how did she get away? Was she a "heavy set" ninja?

There are stations in London that have glass dividers between the platform and the tracks with doors that open automatically once the train stops at the station. Seems like something that should be at every station around the world.

Every time I ride the LIRR, this is my number one fear! I am always on full alert when waiting for the train.

                  Gee, thanks

I will be so self loathing of my condition now.

I don't know because I've never taken a train before, but is there not some kind of gate or something they can put between the train and the platform so this type of thing doesn't happen?

Maybe I'm just dumb, but if I saw this happen, the person who did it is absolutely not getting away...especially. a 5'5 fat woman...

Too expensive, people already complaining the fares are too high now, which they really are. If they installed a gate system I guarantee the transit authority in every city will either raise the fare or taxes in the city or most likely BOTH to pay for it.

When I was in high school, ONE WAY on the bus was $1.25, now it is $2.25 ONE FREAKING WAY in Chicago. Hell a 30 day pass use to be $50 when I was in high school, it is $86 now. And next year Chicago is going to increase their fares on the buses, subways, Metra and toll roads.

That is why I drive everywhere, it is cheaper to drive now then it is to use public transportation. And don't get me started on the fares in NYC....SMH.

Subway fares in NYC is $2.25 to get into the system, and you can travel anywhere it goes so long as you don't exit the system. A guy can go (like I do now depending on the weather) from 2nd ave to times square for 2.25, or you can go from Lower Manhattan to Harlem for $2.25.

I take the 7 when I do ride down. No protection whatsoever, I should be wary as I usually take a peak to see when the train is coming...you just don't think it can happen to you.

There's also some kind of card right? My cousin lives in NYC and a while ago she complained on FB how the price for the card went up substantially.

                            Is all this correct?

When i moved to nyc in 2006, a 30 day pass was $76...it's currently $104 and going up to $112 (i think) on 3/1/13. For me, it's still cheaper then paying per trip..just barely.

It's also still cheaper then paying insurance/gas/parking on a car and cheaper then most other public transportation in the US. It's also one of the few subway systems in the US that runs 24/7. HOWEVER..the MTA pisses money away like no ones business so I'm not even sure that fair hikes are necessary. Many many stations in need of repair/upgrades get ignored if they aren't apart of a major tourist hub.
