criticism of your maturity and video games

Do your friends/family/significant other say you are immature because you love video games? Does it bother you?

I only ask this because I just saw something on facebook where someone was talking about being criticized for being an adult who loves to play video games. I know this is especially an issue for men over 30 (and I'm 30) and married men . I have heard so many stories about how a guy's wife nags him that he plays video games.

I know so many grown men and women that play facebook and other computer games but no one criticizes them for that. Video games is a hobby just as much as reading or collecting memorabila, etc. Not sure why it is such a big deal

I don't think I could ever stop playing video games. Lol I am single now and worry how this will affect me in the future once I get in a relationship....

I don't give a **** what people think about me playing video games. As long as it entertains me and makes me happy I'm gonna keep doing it.

Well only holier than thou people give a **** what others do with their time. But those close to you know you and your hobbies. Who cares if others have a problem with it.

As long as you aren't hurting anyone or yourself why should anybody give a **** what you do?

Everyone that knows me knows I love video games. My wife knew since we met that I'm into video games and we've been married 8 years and now with our daughter she's never had an issue with it. Sure she'll bug me if I'm playing for awhile but it's not that big of a deal. Me and a friend of mine have been big into gaming together since we were in middle school. He comes over from time to time on weekends to game or we game online and the wife has no problems with it. She just calls us nerds.

Re: criticism of your maturity and video games

Yeah you shouldn't care about what people think of you but if you're playing 2-3 hours a day your wasting time IMO. Couple hours a week cool beans, game away.

We all have potential to become great at something but how can we when we don't work our way to become great and live our dreams. Playing video games does not help you become better at anything but playing that video game.

Some posters here won't like my opinion but its the truth. Can you honestly say that a video game has changed your life for the better? Hey if your a 4.0 student, making millions, the best shape your body can be or mentor youth in your community and you still can play 4 hours a day then man keep on gaming.

But if you are not where you want to be then you have to see where you are wasting your time. Not here to bag on anyone's hobbies but obviously the OP is questioning what he is doing is right or wrong and I'm providing my insight on it.

Take the hours you spend on a game and use it to make a difference for yourself, your family and your community and those by far are greater achievements than anything you get from a game.

Those who mind don't matter and those that matter don't mind.

Do what you want to do. As long as its legal, who is anyone to tell you what to do?

Re: criticism of your maturity and video games

I usually play 2-3 hours each night, before going to bed.

I work 50+ hours a week and spend four nights a week in the gym.

My relatives like to hunt and fish and I like to play games.

They crack jokes here and there, but I'm in better physical shape and less socially awkward than all of them.

At the end of the day, it's all about doing what makes you happy. I learned a long time ago that doing what makes me happy won't always please everyone and I couldn't give any less ****s than I do.

Re: criticism of your maturity and video games

Seems like this thread is made every other month. Do what ever floats your boat. People say a lot of things are immature. I shall list all the things I heard that is considered immature growing up and in my life time.

                1. Wearing jerseys

                2. Wearing basketball shoes past the age of 21.

                3. Playing video games as an adult.

                4. Still living in your parents house past the age of 21.

                5. Watching cartoons as an adult.

                6. Most of your food intake is cooked in a microwave past the age of 18. You know pizza rolls, hot pockets, etc.

                7. Still buying and reading comic books as an adult.

                8. Still buying action figures as an adult.

                9. Drinking kool aide and fruity drinks as an adult.

So yeah.......do what you want to do. It is 2012 about to be 2013, video games are more main stream and part of the social norm now then it was during the 1980s and 1990s. IF you have to change who you are to get somebody, then they aren't worth your time anyway.

The crazy thing is my wife doesn't care if I play but I don't unless she's away or sleeping because of the time it takes to finish a game. I'm 33 by the way.

Don't see the big deal, just like any other spare time hobby now a days. Even the most outgoing/fratty people I know in college right now play some type of video games in their spare times usually.

I imagine i'll be playing video games well into my future especially once I get a job as a teacher when I have the time after work.

You make it seem like people don't have freetime. It's quite possible to live your dream, be great at your job or whatever you want to be great at and still play video games everyday.

I guess I just don't really understand your argument. Should we not have hobbies and instead constantly do things for our community and talk to or help our family members and never have time for ourselves?

No. Everyone my age plays video games. Non video gamers are the minority in college.

                            Exactly.

How exactly is watching the Real Housewives of New Jersey beneficial?

Or watching Desperate Housewives when that show was still on? Sex and the City?

How about watching Dexter? Game of Thrones? New Girl?

How about spending 2-3 hours watching a sporting event? Spending 100's of dollars to a ticket to said sporting event along with buying overpriced jerseys and concession stand items? How does that benefit you?

Looking down on someone else for their hobby is even more of a time waster and is more reflective of your maturity level than anything else. If it doesn't concern you. Mind. Your. Own. Business.

I can see where you're coming from, but I don't think it's truth. Everyone needs free time to have a hobby which can include some form of entertainment.

I equate video games to watching tv, sporting events, movies, internet, etc. Based on your post, if I'm on the internet for more than a couple hours a week, if I watch more than 1 movie or more than 1 football game a week, I'm wasting my time.

As Z Revis said people can still have a career, go to school, raise a family, be a part of the community and still have a couple hours a day or more of free time to do what they want.
