A weird question about home entrances

So as I'm crawling home behind a school bus yesterday, I noticed that a lot of the kids who got off the buses didn't use their front doors to enter their homes.

I was just wondering how many people actually did use their front door as opposed to other options. Also why did you think you used that door over the other options?

For the sake of defining front door, it'd be the door closest to the street that your house address is.

    Um....That's a bit weird.

When I was a kid and into my high school years I ALWAYS went in and out of the front door. I wonder if this is something to do with helicopter parents being freaked out that strangers can grab the kid and rush into the house.

Either way, never knew this kind of thing was prevalent.

Re: A weird question about home entrances

We never used our front door as a main entrance to our home as a child. Maybe it was because you had to make a turn and go up the steps to the front door, where the side door was a straight walk from the street. Maybe it was because there wasn't any room to hang coats or place shoes when entering the front door to our home.

Now that I have my own place, we still use the side entrance to our home because that's where our shoes and coats are. Also our front door has to be locked by key from the outside when exiting the home, so we usually use the side door to leave our home so we eliminate a step.

Almost all of my friends and family use a side or back door as the main entrance to their homes as well. I'd say something in the neighborhood of 10:1.

It's just one of those stupid things that you don't think about, but then when you finally do you wonder how many people in the grand scheme of things do/don't do something.

I grew up in a house in the country. The main door we always used was the side door from the kitchen. I probably actually used the front door of the house 50 times or less the whole time I lived there.

We never used the front door because the front door normally led to the living room (the one without a tv and was mainly used to entertain guests) to avoid dirtying the floors.

Plus we always take off our shoes when we entered the house.. so if we entered through the front door, we'd have to take off our shoes, pick them up and walk to the back to put them away.

The back door was just easier to go through because the shoe rack was right there. And if everyone entered through the back door, it would be one less room to clean

I and everybody that come to my house use my garage door. Mainly because I have a dog and he will bolt out the front door if somebody opened it. Over all though, I believe people who have a garage attached to their house go through the garage. People who don't have one or don't have one attached to their house, go through their front door.

Taking a shot in the dark, maybe their parents are working and they lock the front door, and give them access to a back door (key under a rock, etc).

My friend used to be able to fit through his doggy door to let himself in. I mean he was like eight years old, but that was his way in his home.

Speaking of that, when I was in high school, I had one friend who never had keys to the apartment he lived in. His mom was that strict. So on days when she wasn't at home when we got out of high school, he had to go to a neighbor's apartment.

I've always used the front door, but I know when my mom was growing up in Illinois, they used the back door.

I should say that when I was little and our garage door worked, depending on the vehicle, we would either use the garage/utility door or front door. It was a one car garage, so the truck was outside and the car was inside.

This is mainly going to depend on type of house you live in.

Most ranch style homes people will enter through the garage area. Where the more big city homes you will see more entering via front door.

I only go through my front door if I can see through the storm door that it's open. I have a key to all three doors and I usually choose the side or sliding back door on the deck.

It's just a habit I formed as a kid because we always hid a key to the side door for when my parents were not home and we needed in the house after school.

Yeah, that's how it was when iI was in around 6-8 grade. The key my sister and I used was in a piece of pipe near the basement door which was in the back. When I was in 9th grade my sister and I finally got our own keys so we could go in the front door.

Side door. There's more space there to keep shoes, coats, etc.

Had my own keys since 3rd grade. It was weird because my mom was a house wife and was always there. But she allowed me to use my keys to open up the door. I felt like a man, like yeah I have some keys. Took me a while to learn all the keys though. Grew up in an apartment building, so had the outside door, front door that had 2 locks, the front door gate lock, back door which was 2 locks, plus the back door gate lock key.

                              So in total 7 keys.
