I'll rephrase. Parent's who home school their kids that don't live in areas with schools that have gang violence and the school is just fine are terrible parents. When the HS you could send them to achieves the highest rating possible and you still home school it's just overprotective parenting when it's not needed.

Re: Uncommon Opinions
Terrible parents? That seems a bit excessive. Terrible teachers? Most likely, but I don't see teaching your child as being a candidate for terrible parenting.

Re: Uncommon Opinions
Terrible might be to far of a reach since they are doing what they think is best. But you can achieve the same results by just being a hard *** when it comes to homework and grades. This without having to rip them away the things that make high school great. One great teacher will achieve more than what mommy can provide in the living room classroom. I revised my statement again to throw out if they live in crappy school district.Comment

Home school can be great, but you do have to put in real effort and whatnot when teaching. I ran into a few home schooled kids in my dorm freshman year of college and they were very wide-eyed and pretty naive. Definitely not ready socially for the big college environment.
One was awesome in school, the other struggled at basic stuff...so home school can prepare you, but also could hurt you. Same as a regular HS can do to you IMO. I wouldn't condemn home school any more than I'd condemn local HS qualities.
*Oh, I know my experiences are limited, but just thought I'd share what I'd experience. I went to public school until HS when I went to a top Catholic HS in my area that was much better than my public HS.Nintendo Switch Friend Code: SW-7009-7102-8818Comment

Re: Uncommon Opinions
I don't know. If the parents are doing research into the curriculum and do not agree (ie: Common Core) with it and they want to take on that added responsibility of education development then more power to them. Some of the things my cousin posts that her elementary aged daughter brings home from school would probably lead me down that road.
SpoilerOne posts was a scan of a worksheet with an example. The example was the following:
Add 26 + 17 by breaking apart numbers to make a ten.
Use a number that adds with 6 in 26 to make a 10. Since 6+4 = 10, use 4.
Think: 17 = 4+13
Add: 26 + 4 = 30
Add: 30 + 13 = 43
So, 26 + 17 = 43
Seriously, what is that nonsense?

Re: Uncommon Opinions
Because it makes no sense and seems to contain no logic whatsoever. The easier and simpler calculation would be to know that 7+6=13 and you carry the one into the next column. The breakdown for that short-cut is not only doing more math than necessarily, but its not teaching the student how to add those two starting numbers.

I know in my head I'm not carrying numbers when randomly adding things. Faster than trying to keep track of carry values in large numbers.Nintendo Switch Friend Code: SW-7009-7102-8818Comment

Re: Uncommon Opinions
I went to a pretty good high school and my wife home schooled instead of going to that school. She turned out pretty good. Has excellent social skills. Really just depends on the situation. To say she has terrible parents is assuming a lot.MLB: Texas Rangers

Re: Uncommon Opinions
I find it fairly easy to add numbers without those tricks, though. Once you learn how numbers add and keep doing it then there's really no more need for tricks and short-cuts which, for me, take longer and cause more clutter.

Re: Uncommon Opinions
In my experience most people who I've met that were home schooled had poor social skills. But there were kids in my school who had next to no social skills too. The key is if you're going to home school your child, you should still sign them up for a sport or another hobby which promotes interaction with kids their age.
Being educated and motivated to teach him or her the curriculum is important too I suppose.Last edited by areobee401; 10-22-2013, 05:25 PM. Reason: Spelled their wrong. Good thing I won't be home schooling my daughter. I'm clearly not qualified for the job.Comment

Re: Uncommon Opinions
Why are parents terrible if they decide they know how to better educate their children than someone else?
It's their choice.Comment

Re: Uncommon Opinions
If you can't afford private school, a lot of times home schooling could be a much better option than what some kids are subjected to in most public school systems around the country.
I wasn't home schooled and I doubt my hypothetical, future kids will either, but there's nothing wrong with it. I do think there are some advantages to mixing and mingling with our kids, opposed to staying home and around family.Comment
