There are ways to immerse yourself in the community regardless. Sports programs, etc. It's not like the kid is completely isolated.

The worse things get, the more I consider home-schooling my future children.

My mother would have sent me back to public school after a week of home schooling. **** I might have made it back for lunch period on the first day because of me driving her crazy

As the resident mathematician, I'm going to call you out. Is it written weird? Yes. However, the logic is just fine. It's what I do when I add large numbers in my head. It's a basic example, so of course it's going to look kind of dumb. But if you were adding 7326 + 504, would you still considered adding with carrying numbers? Maybe, maybe not. You're going to add it up into pieces, which you may do faster without writing it down physically. Seems at least one other person mentioned this as well. Would you do this on paper? Eh, probably not but you have to show kids some how. It's still a viable technique.

Meh. Math is weird. There's no right or wrong way to calculate anything so long as you get the "correct" or standard answer. However, if you're using an illogical (in someone else's eyes or line of thinking) method and you can't explain how you arrived at said answer then you're going to be looked at funny and then be told to do it in a way that person can understand.

Which is what the those who agreed with Fresh just did (including myself).

I need to stop pointing out I'm a hypocrite

                          Re: Uncommon Opinions

High school education was pointless. What did I learn? Packets, how to take notes, how to take more notes, and the proper way to lift weights.

I learned algebra, and that was a waste of my life. I already learned basic math before high school, and that I could actually use. Grammar skills? I learned that before high school.

It blew my mind at how stupid the curriculum was.

Algebra- never use it, and I'm appalled that it was must take class. N+65 - -45 = Who gives a ****.

Geometry- Yea, because I have to know what a trapezoid looks like, and how to do math with shapes.

Spanish- Ehh useful, but not the way they teach it, Spanish vocab anyone.

World History/American History. I guess this would be a revelation to some students, but I already had a really good grasp on History, I've always been into it. So kinda useful for the slower ones.

But dedicating an entire week to the muslim dynasties in the 1400's or whatever, just stupid.

English? Do you mean reading packets and reading Beowulf or other books. No.

Science/Chemistry. Kinda interesting, but do I need to know how to label the anatomy of a flower, or know the periodic table of elements to get by in life?

Drivers ed- useful and had hot girls in that class Win.

But that's the basis of the classes I had. I learned basically nothing, a few spanish skills maybe, that's ok I learned girls, so it's all good.

I have found History, English and German at least somewhat useful at one point or another. I really enjoy History, English really got me to tap into my love for public speaking and German has led me to want to study languages more. I'm currently starting to learn ancient Greek and a bit of classical Latin, because I can and I enjoy learning languages... there are other reasons too, but they're kinda TOS-y

lol @ "Call me out." Touche

Maybe my methods are just different than the vast majority. I typically add left to right so I'm not really fumbling around with carrying numbers. My concern really lied with how poorly that "shortcut" is not only explained, but executed. The whole "breaking apart" numbers thing is poorly explained and to me is confusing - I don't know how a 3rd grader would react. It took more time (and more importantly more thought) performing the shortcut/trick than doing the actual problem when the "trick" of knowing that 7 + 6 = 13 is much more effective. I know I'm hammering the explain, but teaching shortcuts for 2 digit numbers would seem to undermine the base of learning that is being built.

But, as you said, there is more than one way to get to a solution.
