    Re: Uncommon Opinions

I didn't watch it for years because I hate zombie shows and it annoyed me even more that adults were having watch parties for a show about zombies.

On Super Bowl Sunday of last year they started a marathon at like 8 am and woke up to the first episode. I was lucky enough to wake up to it and quickly realized it is hardly about zombies. We power watched every episode of every season in about 6 weeks.

    It's a fantastic show.

That being said, I have no idea what bdolski was talking about. His post about "overrated" for a show that is a top rated show made no sense and it was like he was just trying to pick an e-fight.

I think if someone thinks this show is overrated, based on the numbers it draws, this is a perfect thread to post that thought in.

Are you trying to tell me that America doesn't love forklifts? Because a forklift hating America is not the America I know.

The numbers Walking Dead does are absolutely asinine. It is incredibly, ridiculously, unfathomably popular.

And it's thoroughly OK to not like it.

I hate what's happened to the culture of TV nowadays. People are under the assumption that they have to love every single show because everyone else does too. If it doesn't work for you, it doesn't work for you. And that's totally fine. But since everything's all trendy and everyone is so needy and craves acceptance, they feel like they'll be cast as outsiders if they dare not like something. It's part of the whole binge-watching, "omg I have to catch up on _______," Netflix-type culture.

It's pathetic. Watch what you want to watch. I think The Goldbergs and Last Man Standing are the two best comedies on TV and I think The Americans is---by far---the best drama on TV. Boss was masterpiece television to me but it got no attention because it was on Starz instead of AMC or HBO. Horrible.

I will say another uncommon opinion----I MUCH prefer sitcoms/comedies to dramas. Too bad the quality in modern dramas hasn't made its way to the comedy genre.

My opinion (not sure if it's uncommon or not), I think network TV by and large sucks. Until The Muppets came on a couple weeks ago, I had not watched a single network show, comedy, drama, whatever, in probably 5 years.

The wife used to be on Bill Engvall's sitcom and for some reason, she annoys me.

I guess my uncommon opinion is that I like shows because I like them. Not because other people like them.

I agree. Part of it is that people want to be a part of something, and have something in common and/or something to talk about with other people. It's less about the actual quality of the show. But I guess that's "popular culture" in a nut shell, and human nature.

And it all ties into the same culture of consumption that results in people waiting in line for days to get the new iPhone. Not that this is all new, but it's about as bad now as it was in the 1980s. People need to have what other people have, and they need to like what other people like to feel like they are somehow accepted. Reminds me of high school, lol.

It could also just be that if if a show, or product, comes highly recommended to you by people you know, then you're more likely to give it a chance. Basically how it worked for me with Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones.

                        Re: Uncommon Opinions

The Walking Dead for me, my interest comes from I just have always enjoyed the end of the world/apocalypse type shows.

I like zombies, so I watch partially for that, but the Walking Dead goes so much further beyond. You witness the social changes of the world after the apocalypse happens. Society melts down, people riot (which makes it easier for the walkers to bite and spread the disease), once all hell has ravaged the earth and you're just left with the survivors, similar to what the group has seen in the show, you have to contend not only with the undead threat, but the living threat as well.

If the Walking Dead became real, it'd be the exact same case as in the show. All the "bad" people aren't just going to disappear. They're still gonna be there, and now there won't be the police to stop them. You'll still have your murderers, your psychopaths, your rapists, your abusers, molesters, assaulters, your druggies, your gang bangers. You also have those that will want to set fire to the world just to watch it burn. Look at Ferguson. In addition to the protesters, you had those that came into the town with the sole intention of rioting, looting, setting cars and buildings on fire, destroying whatever they could. It'd be the exact same case if the Walking Dead became real. Season one of Fear the Walking Dead showed that perfectly.

So for me, Walking Dead is so much more than just zombies. The zombies are fine and an added interest, but the social breakdowns of the world in the Walking Dead universe are also of great interest. Not only having to deal with the undead, but also having to deal with the random encounters with other survivors, never sure if you can trust them or if they'll gut you in your sleep and steal your supplies or try and turn you into manburgers. And in the case of the Walking Dead, getting to watch and see how those like Rick and others have changed from season to season as they've seen a whole host of awful things and experience awful things and experienced death and losses.

That's why I watch and enjoy the Walking Dead, not to trendy or follow the herd and watch the wildly popular shows. I watch to see what the end of the world and death of humanity would potentially look like, both with an undead threat and with the ever present human threat, a threat that will never disappear until the last humans are in fact dead.
