Is there an "acceleration limit" driving law?

Provided that you remain under the speed limit and you don't hit a car in front of you or burn rubber, is there a driving law which a police officer could recite in court that says one "accelerated too quickly" while driving, or something similar to that in different wording?

So, say you're leading a load of cars at a red traffic light in a 45 MPH zone. When it turns green, does it matter if you climb to 45 MPH in ten seconds or four seconds?

Not entirely sure but there could be a technicality and it be labeled as 'careless' or 'reckless' driving.

In some states and towns it is. Falls under the drag racing statute.

yep street racing would be a charge they may be able to apply, but if you stay under the speed limit and there isn't another car with you, then you most likely could get out of it

Also depends on where you did it at and what time, later at night say in the city. The car also matters, if you are in a car that looks like you street race in it, then the more likely you will be charged.

Reckless driving is a pretty broad motor vehicle law

Yeah, some laws like this give the police the leeway to arrest people for unsafe activities. Laws can't cover every specific situation with detail.

I think 99.9% of the time a citation is issued as opposed to an arrest when dealing with reckless driving.

I would tend to agree. One of the only two times I've been pulled over in my life came when I was on a highway interchange. I was on an on-ramp and needed to merge but there was a truck or RV just chilling in the right lane. There was room for them to change lanes but they did not.

Either way, I had a choice of reducing the speed I'd already gained and merging behind the vehicle, or accelerating in hurry to merge ahead of the vehicle. I chose the latter and despite not surpassing the 70mph speed limit, I was immediately pulled over. I was not ticketed, but the officer had drawn issue with my overly aggressive acceleration and merge. I could not blame him. I figure "reckless driving" can cover just about any type of abnormal driving maneuver.

My AP history teacher was once pulled over when I was in high school for accelerating too slowly. He figured the cops were just bored.

This happened to my friend as well. Except, he was just driving down a dirt road very slowly, attempting to keep his car in one piece.

Also, years ago, I remember watching a show on TLC about a man in Europe who followed every single driving law to a T. Exact speeds, full stops everywhere all the time, etc. Ironically, he'd been frequently pulled over for being suspiciously law-abiding.

In California, it is known as Exhibition of Speed. You can get your car impounded for 30 days for it.

Not in Louisiana, that's for sure. My dad and I both have been guilty of gunning the Challenger off of a stoplight and I've never heard anybody getting stopped for it.

I just don't see the point of going that fast that quickly, etc.

Like today this person was flying behind me then had to quickly switch lanes to avoid hitting me(I was going 40, 5 over the speed limit) and then avoid hitting the car just ahead of me in the other land he tightly cut me off. I laughed when I got in the lane to turn right into the plaza that he was right there waiting to turn, cause that dangerous driving really paid off.

I'm always amazed at the moves people will make to save what often ends up being no time at all.

The only time I do it is when I'm leading a left lane at a stoplight, and I chose that lane because virtually every car is crowding the right lane (to get on the upcoming freeway entrance or something, for example). I know that if I don't get past the first car, there's no chance I'm making the freeway, so I'll jump ahead of them. Again, not burning rubber... just pulling in front is all.

For the record, I didn't get pulled over for anything, I simply debated this with someone is all thinking that the speed limit is the only law regarding your speed (minus what may or may not fall into "reckless driving").
