I'm in need of a smoker this summer, and I'm not sure if it's worth the extra money to get a Weber SMC, or get a cheaper Char-Broil type of smoker.

All the reviews of the SMC are great, but it's also $300.
Worth every penny IMO. Had mine for a year now and use it almost every weekend I can.

Any advice for a grilling thermometer? We just by cheapo ones at the grocery store and they last a while but eventually die...

I'm willing to spend a little more if it's truly worth it.

I like to be able to check temperature to see if it's done. Yes, I'm learning to gauge it without temps, but my mind is very logical so I like the temperature aspect to know for sure.

This summer I'm hoping to go from 'make it hot, flip stuff, take it out and collect all the compliments' to becoming a more deliberate griller.

Curious as to the first time you guys 'made that jump' and what you cooked?

Never cooked brisket, ribs, etc... more of a burgers, pork chops/steak, steak guy myself. Time to change that.

If anyone is ever having a bad day or just wants to know what is good about America and being a man ... just come to this thread. I can't wait for the snow to melt so I can make horrible duplications of some of the things you guys have posted. That tri-tip is destroying my will right now.

Agree 100% for a regular thermometer. If you're into smoking, I recommend a Maverick Wireless thermometer.

BTW, I serve my tri tip with warm tortillas (warmed over the coals of course) and fresh salsa. Typically eaten right at the grill...

I'm looking for a regular thermometer. Thanks for the link. I'm tired of buying 10 buck ones that die, are slow, etc. Seems like this should last a while and is much faster at getting a temp.

                          Well since we're posting thermometers,

                          I prefer this one.... http://www.centralrestaurant.com/Pen...177p14538.html

It ranges from -40 to 450. Its the size of a pen, has a digital ambient or lighted readout.
Can be C or F, can be calibrated and is waterproof and dishwasher safe.

I use a wireless one I grabbed from lowes. I don't remember the brand name but it was around $50, so nothing that will break the bank. When it comes to smoking you need a wireless one.

I definitely recommend the smokey mountain cooker. It works great low-and-slow but it also does high heat smokes well. It is more expensive but you can't beat Weber's warranty and customer service. I also have a stainless steel Weber six burner gas grill (with and additional smoker box burner) for about 10 years now. Well, when cleaning it one day, one of the burner cross-over tubes had rusted some and broke while I was removing it. The cross over tube looks like a steel drinking straw and is about 6 inches long and it allows you to light one burner from another. So I called Weber to order one and was told it was still under warranty (yes almost 10 years) so they would send a new one for free. When the package arrived, it contained new burner and cross over tubes for all seven burners. Now the guts of my grill are brand new... SWEET!

Also, you definitely need a thermometer to monitor the meat temperature as well as the temperature at the grate.

                              I use this one:

Maverick Wireless BBQ Thermometer Set - Maverick ET73

Thanks Holic and Finn. I think I'll save up the extra $$ and shell out for something more in quality like the Smokey Mountain Cooker.
