What is wrong with our society?

A couple weeks ago, our school had a conference on first response gun violence. I remember thinking that stuff never happens here. We live in very rural communities were everyone knows everyone. You can count all the murders in this county over the last hundred years on one hand.

Yesterday at School we had a situation were my school went into "lock down." My kids told me they heard a gunman had been shooting in the neighboring village. I didn't believe it at first, but looked on the computer and saw this man had blown up his house, drove to a barber shop were he shot 4 people, then proceeded to drive to the Jiffy Lube oil change and shoot two more.

After all was said 4 innocent people lost their lives and two are in the hospital in critical condition. All schools and people in the area were locked in their homes and work for hours. The man then went to an abandoned bar and fired shots at police were he was surrounded over night.

The man was finally taken out this morning and the reality is setting in. 4th grade students were telling me today their grandparents were there and saw everything and were pulling in to get an oil change.

It is scary stuff. I really don't understand what would cause a person to do this. Is this going to be our society now? People deciding they need to mass murder innocent people?

I am thankful to all the police, troopers, FBI, fire departments and first responders who battled the cold all night to make everyone feel a little safer.

Crazy.

I don't know what's going on anymore. Perhaps all of these things that are meant to make life "easier" have really just increased the stress people have? There definitely seems to be more craziness lately.

Society has been like this for a very LONG time. Nothing new about it at all. Only difference now that we have 24 hour news cycle and mass media at the touch of a button every where. So you just hear about it more often, but it was always going on.

I agree with this but also add the fact that there are MORE people now than there have ever been and the increasing use of mind altering LEGAL drugs and you have a recipe for people to go off the deep end.

That doesn't really have anything to do with it. Things like SSRIs have been around since the 50s and their official usage as anti anxiety/depressants was only found after scientists realized that other drugs related to other medical conditions (not mental health) affected serotonin/dopamine etc reuptake and thus decided to produce a drug purely designed to produce those effects. Also, there is no correlation between those sort of drugs and violence. The issue is not guns, medications, politics, religion, or anything else. It is simply humans being humans and doing human things. It just seems like more things are happening now because weapons development means that one incident can take a larger toll and media means that you hear about it when it happens. Not to mention everyone bickering about what the proximate cause of the violence was while not finding an ultimate one.

I know I have been pretty sheltered and never experienced anything like this so close to home. You see this stuff on the news and never expect it to happen in your small town. I knOw how scared I was making sure all my family was safe.

So many people suffered for a senseless act. Firemen had to battle a fire all day... police officers shot at and innocent by standers and their families all had their lives changed forever.

My heart really goes out to everyone. Really sad when I walked into school today we had 6 year olds afraid of being shot. This stuff is senseless and makes no sense. Could have been any of us any where.

What's wrong with society is what has historically been an enduring element of human existence. The argument is that there really are no solid authentic statistics to support that this kind of thing is on the rise. The difference between now and the past is, I believe, the coverage availablity. Internet sites and 24 hour news channels are tasked to fill time and space throughout the day. We are exposed to every nuance of these matters, compared to the pre-internet and cable glut days where you got a story and maybe some follow up stories. It's like the "Jaws" syndrome. Seems like there's more and more shark attacks when we get the gruesome news, but in fact there really aren't, it seems.

But I think that is the difference. These people (not all of them, and not particularly this one) want the coverage. They want to be known, heard, and/or understood. A lot of people who are suicidal might either be depressed or might be trying to send a message. I don't want to say they're not all crazy, but I do want to say that sometimes in their minds they will be martyrs for what they consider to be a greater good, even if it means taking others' lives or their own.

I don't know what was up with this guy and what drove him to do what he did, but I can guarantee you that he gets exactly what he wanted... to be talked about on every medium, including Internet message boards. I do believe if he wasn't heard about, he would have regretted doing this. That's just the way we are by nature.

But Blz...that's been a factor in the past as well. The murders bring them recognition and notoriety. Earlier mass murders and serial killers of the narcissitic bent have no notion of an "internet" or "over-satiated cable news" world; newspapers and radio/TV reports were the norm. Those truly seeking the limelight probably care less about being "understood", though I could see in some that that might be a deeper seated drive/motivation.

The bottom line is that there are no discernible statistics to say it's significantly on the rise. Those generally purporting that are those who are trying to get guns banned. And like it or not, we all know that guns themselves are no more responsible for killing people as are forks for making people fat.

I'm hoping this guys the *** ram that he deserves in jail. So much that he cries himself to sleep at night.

I don't remember hearing about this shooting, but man that kid is one cold-hearted SOB. People like that don't even deserve to live. Forget lethal injection, bring back electrocution for his ***. Tax dollars shouldn't even be spent keeping his *** in prison. Unbelievable.

I cant say i have the answers, but my biggest issue is now days we tend to treat people who do these awful things too good. im tired of hearing about how these shooters are victims to bad parents, bullying, society and so on and so forth, then they get to sit in jail on our dime for 50 years... As someone who owns many guns im also sick of having my rights put into question because of others actions, guns are a tool, they have no morality of there own.

I also hate how the media treats these things, i was sickened when the Newtown shooting happened, but what was even worse was how quick the media was to blame the wrong person and then start interviewing children on what they saw and heard. As long as major news networks keep treating these things like some kind of train wreck to watch and gawk at it will keep happening.

Ain't it horrible that i cant personally name any of the victims of these shootings off the top of my head, but i sure as hell know the names of the killers, thats because the media makes them anti-heroes and parades there names around. People who do things like this should have there names erased from the record, not become part of our history.

It just plays right into the sick minds of mental people or just ones who seek attention in this sick tormented way. Some might say im sick for saying this but in cases like these we should really bring back the gallows, let them show that on national television and see how many idiots want the limelight when they got the rope coming at the end of it all.
