Looking for work is so frustrating

I do have a job currently and am very grateful, especially since I have been on the same job for the last 13 years.

That said, im looking for another and out of many things Im seeing online, so many companies are requiring employees to work a ton of hours, among other things like wanting you to work OT, weekends, holidays, not compensating the pay in kind, and no mention of work life balance.

Not only that, some of the most simple positions they want degrees to hire for it, man how frustrating. Im looking at landscaping company and see people talking of extra long hours. What ever happened to flexible schedules or someone giving their honest 8 then moving on?

Agreed on the work-life balance issue. I took an administrative job for a company that distributes outhouses, and today was my first day of training. Everything about the company and work environment sounded great, until the supervisor said she has no hobbies. I hope she does not expect me to work at nights and on weekends just because she would.

This doesn't mean I don't care about the company or that I am not committed. It just means I want to have an outside life, which most jobs today do not seem to understand.

Is it really that hard though?

You work to live, but you don't live to work.Just too simple

Don't think I've ever thought of taking less pay to get away from some of the craziness

I haven't seen any jobs requiring overtime and extended hours, at least in my fields of interest, but at the same time, I'm not hearing anything back. I have time before I need a job after school, but time is ticking. Ridiculous how little you hear back from people despite having a master's, research experience, and lab experience.

I hear ya 23! I'm set at my current job (I run a medical sales company, assistant manager), I can come and go as I please. I can take off when ever I need or just leave and go run a errand at my leisure. Zero pressure and I'm not going anywhere here. The problem is I want more money.

Here is where I am in same boat as you. I have come across jobs that I'm qualified for and have gone through interviewing processes, but for a small increase in pay they want more hours and much more restricted schedule.

So I'm left in this predicament do I take a job making just a little more money or do I stay at the position I know I'm set at and have a cush do what I want atmosphere.

Currently I've chose to take the "I'm not going anywhere" job but when I do get a offer that offers a significant increase in pay THEN I will make the sacrifice to suck it up and go for the money.

I hear you. I'm at a job with an hourly wage and I get paid for whatever hours I work and there are nice overtime opportunities. I would rather work in another field pertaining to my education but I would likely have to increase my hours and reduce pay.

Dude you're gold though, and since you can have time to do other things, you can do other things, but who wants to work more than one job all the time right?

The flexibility is important to me, I have a family, I have to pick up the kids, I have other responsibilities besides work and along with that... I need time to wind down. Giving all of my life and energy to a corporation only is just wrong.

Im not into the politics and butt kissing and while more money would be great, it just depends on the circumstances. My wife works which is very helpful to me, but I cant take a salary so low that it messes up the house.

A few thousand less but no commute would probably even out because right now the drive is a mess and with that alot of money on gas.

That's insane man.. but eventually you'll break down that wall. You may not see the increase of your time being required where you are, but I sure see it in alot of places, weekends, holidays, overtime..its crazy.

Yea and see I think those things play huge into a job. For instance how I'm willing to take less money for those advantages I currently have. I think it is hard to put a price on things such as being completely needed at your company you know you could stay for 30 years and never would have to look for work, then things like the freedom to come and go and do "life" duties on the clock with no reprimand. Just these small things but they play huge into making my "non-working life" a lot less stressful.

Now with that said, at some point I think I'll come across the job that offers enough to make me give up the advantages I have currently.

For what you have, the offer would have to be mighty significant

That's just unheard of almost. I have a family member in graphic design who left MCA to do his own company.

I think it was hard for him at first and he wasnt making nearly as much, but now he works when he wants mostly, travels when he wants, has no responsibilities (no car note, no mortgage, no kids or wife), goes to occassional meetings, but other than that..he's home, sleeps in late if he wants, stays up late and has the clients to design work for all the time. I've had him tell me "im going to take a month off, then start work again"

I'd go bananas if I could do that.

I agree. I'm not interested in making more, if I have to further sacrifice time. I'm currently making enough to live and save a bit...the only part that sucks is the commute. I wake up at 7, get home by 7. However, I have it much easier than those working at much more prominent firms and putting in extra work, but are salaried just as I am.

I'm happy and wouldn't consider more money for way more time.

I'm salary and work 8-5, Mon-Fri. I'm working no more than that if I'm salary. My commute is easy also, 10 min from house. I leave at 7:50 in morning and get home by 5:15 in afternoon.

I wouldn't give that up man, so long as you aren't in any financial binds and can save 10% each year, you are fine.

I would almost kill for just a M-F job. I get sick of people saying TGIF. I've worked most weekends since I turned 16 almost 8 years ago. That's exactly the reason I left my position at Home Depot. Now I get Sunday off, but it flies by because the earlier Im off on Saturday is 6. You can't find work near home.. I drive almost 50 minutes to and from work every day. I make decent, but not enough to afford my own place closer to work, comfortably. I'm just stuck in a rut that I hate. I'm considering taking a pay cut and going back to my last job that's only 10 minutes from home. I don't even care about the money anymore. The drive is really inconvenient.

You guys be thankful for those good hours and off days. The irony here is my enlistment into the Navy (:
