    1960's Baseball Cards... Please help

An older buddy of mine at work owns an Antique store and I asked him if he had any sports memorabilia... He said no, but he did have some old cards. I asked him what ones, and he had no idea... He said, "I'll give them to you for $100." I told him to bring them in so last night, he did.

1963 Topps Hank Aaron/Ernie Banks "Power Plus"
    1960 Topps Brooks Robinson
    1961 Topps Brooks Robinson
    1961 Topps Harmon Killebrew
    1961 Topps Bob Gibson
1961 Topps Sandy Koufax/Johnny Podres "Dodger Southpaws"
    1960 Topps Tony Kubek
    1961 Topps Don Drysdale
    1971 Wilt Chamberlain/Elvin Hayes/Lew Alcindor

I looked some of them up, and they amount to way more than $100, but I don't know what you can trust online. All I would want to do is flip these for a profit but the card shops in my area are sparse, if not out of business altogether but I think one or two are still open...

Anyway, was just wondering if you guys thought I should jump on this or not?

I know there's a baseball cards thread, but he let me bring them home for the day so I can make a decision, so I need to find out if this would be a good deal for me or not. Thanks all.

And I know most everyone says this, but these cards were taken care of... They are in beautiful condition.

Are you sure they are originals?

While getting back into the game, one thing I have learned is that what a card books at and what it sells for are two totally different things.

I think it's safe to say that most of us on OS that have recently purchased cards have done so way under book value.

Case in point - I bought a mint Yogi Berra game worn jersey card and a graded 9.5 Willie Mays jersey card for under $24 total.

The book value on the Mays alone was over $100 - Ungraded.

So if you are looking to turn these for an instant profit, you may be on the losing end, even if the book value begs to differ.

That is an issue with older cards that are in "great" condition. They could be reprints.

If everything checks out and is legit with those cards, I know the 1960 Brooks Robinson could and probably would fetch you a pretty penny.

Given the shape is as great as you say and the card is centered properly, I would recommend you pony up the cash and get PSA to grade it.

It would give the card a lot of credibility with collectors and fetch you a lot more money.

Possibly around the $400-600 mark if it hits a PSA 7+.

They look original to me... There is some aging, but again to my untrained eye, they look like they are in great shape.

                They definitely don't look fake.

Dumb question, but how do I go about getting it PSA graded?

But it wouldn't surprise me if they were reprints... My buddy is 58 and is not a sports fan at all and has had these cards for quite a few years -- probably going back to the 80's.

But it wouldn't surprise me if someone sold him fake cards, because I don't think he would have had the card acumen to get them checked out.

Personally, I think it's a stretch at $100. None of those cards are extremely valuable, so there's a chance you could actually lose money if you tried to sell them. If I were you I'd offer $75 and see if he takes it.

Damn, really? So even with vintage cards, the market is that bad? On the low end, I priced out those nine cards at around $375 last night... From a couple of different sources.

$75 seems pretty low but you might be right.

That $375 is probably book value, and cards rarely sell for anything close to the book value. Did a quick search of them on eBay looking at sold listings, and the majority of those cards have sold in the $10-$15 range. You also have to figure losing 10% or so if you plan on selling them on eBay.

Don't quote me on this, but the centering doesn't look like anything spectacular, which is probably a good thing if you are worried about their authenticity.

Check out the eBay prices and PSA guides. If you think they are authentic and 6 grades or higher, offer him. $75. If not, make the $100 gamble. EDIT: But only if you feel they will grade higher. The cards don't price out like you would expect in average condition.

But hell, you prove to me those Robinson cards are authentic and in good shape and I may even bid on them.
