    Re: Welp, I'm in trouble

Get to the DMV 45 minutes before it opens. Take care of all that. Cross it off the checklist. I would go and try to get any job you can get, there a wal-mart or something like that in the area? They are usually always looking for help, might be graveyard or something, but better than nothing. I think if your mom sees you doing this stuff it might appease her a bit, seeing you put the effort in ya know, that goes a long way.

Being 19 can not sure where you life is headed can be scary man, I hope everything works out. Attitude can take you far in life man, don't be scared, don't go to bed anxious about having to wake up in the morning. Get fired up. Wake up ready to make some changes.

    Good luck man.

Also, do what gopher said. A busboy can make some decent side cash off tips, might not be a lot but going home with money in your pocket every night is pretty cool. Get after it man, look the manager in the eye and tell him/her you are willing to go above and beyond in order to help the team give the guests the best experience possible. Smile a lot.

I know what its like to be stuck in a rut. Every day gets a little worse, the more you don't act the easier it is not to act at all. Its like you are waiting for something big to happen. Just get after it. It won't be easy, it might suck for a few weeks, but get that first paycheck, Mom will surely be happy with that progress.

I am rooting for you bro. Keep your head up. Never let em see you sweat.

How's your grades? Because I don't understand how a mother isn't satisfied with her son going to school full time and wants him to give that up for the military. But yes, you should at the bare minimum have a summer job. The community college I went to had hundreds of jobs there. I worked in 4 or 5 different departments.

Duke, have you gotten your ID yet?
If not, call them to see if you can schedule an appt that day or tomorrow. Also, find out what info/documents they need from you. Trust me, you don't want to wait 2 hours in a line only to be told you need to have a certain type of document they need.

Cell phone bill or any bill in your name that has your address on it.....

              Social security card...

              Birth certificate....

Most places I lived you needed 2 out of 3. A few places required all 3. Place I live now, only 1 was needed because they overly trusting here. Don't have to be exactly what I posted, but they going to want a proof of address and documentation proving who you are.

I have the necassary documents needed. I have my school ID, my fee sheet from Grambling, my social security card, my birth certificate, and a recent bill.

In other news she's already started backtracking....but the more information I look up, the more I think I can do this. It's not the physical requirements that are going to be a problem, it's more the mental aspects of things.

I think this could strengthen me mentally in ways that would be beneficial.

I'm looking at this as a serious decision.

                  Jare's right here.

Just gotta put in the work, maybe catch a break or two, and things will look up. It's always gonna be a struggle, but that doesn't mean there aren't a lot of good times too.

Unless you are 100% then don't join the military. It's a big decision and one you can't just quit when you are tired of it.

                      Re: Welp, I'm in trouble

Man, join the military. It isn't that bad and it'll show you some self discipline - something it seems you need at this point in your life.

I got kicked out of high school in my senior year running with a gang. My mother and sister moved but she left me in AC. Once I turned 18 I started "acting" like an adult so she treated me like one. It was the best lesson I've ever learned in life. Soon that money I was hustling for went from fitteds and sneaks to having to be the money to eat. It took me from several near death/jail moments before I finally got my ish together, thanks to the military. When your grandmother tells you that you have a better chance at surviving in Iraq/Afghan than what I was doing it pretty much sums up what I was doing.

The military is a great start. Forget all of those dead end jobs that have no real career progression like Mickey D's and Taco Bell. Trust me, I've tried Texas Roadhouse, Durand Glass, T-Fal, Sony, a chicken wing spot and numerous other factories. I wish I would of skipped over all of those and went straight in the military. For a kid in your position, it'll be perfect.

                        Re: Welp, I'm in trouble

I did some really serious soul searching before I finally made my mind up I was joining the military. When I was sure, I was sure..

If you have the right recruiter, he won't try to push you into anything and will be willing to help you learn before making any bad decisions.

Good luck with it, though. It's not as simple as just walking into an office and signing papers and you're in. There's a process and it sucks. That small taste of the process should let you know right away whether or not it's something for you.

You still have to go to MEPS and get physically cleared. So if it's something you looked into, don't let a recruiter try to make you feel like you have to make a decision then and there.

I almost walked out of MEPS in Montgomery without joining after making 5 trips there and seeing two doctors to get cleared, because they tried to bull **** me about my job.

For me, I still have a long way to go and the hard part is yet to come. I welcome the challenge, though

                          Re: Welp, I'm in trouble

We as men all have faced that "crossroads" period in our lives. I was 18 when I encountered mine. I grew up in Houston and I didn't have the best childhood growing up(single parent household, broke, food stamps, hand-me-down clothes etc.). I knew that if I wanted better for myself and future family, I had to completely remove myself from the negativity. For me, that meant moving to Dallas to go to school.

It was hard, man. At the end of Freshman year, I was so broke I foolishly succumbed to criminal activity to change my circumstances (don't ever be that dumb, guys). After a couple weeks in the slammer, my family sort of turned their backs on me. I couldn't let that mistake define me, so I regrouped and became more determined than ever to finish school and graduating from college became my sole motivation. I had to prove them wrong. I found a full-time job as a bank teller and took 12 hours (all night classes) each semester and finished in 4.5 years total. Once I got my first job offer, I cried like a ****ing baby because I felt like I overcame and was finally able to provide a decent life for myself. One of the greatest feelings ever.

Everyone's road isn't the same, the most important thing is figuring out what you want out of life. I know you want better for yourself, so now the key is figuring out the best way that'll get you there.

Sorry about the post-high school documentary. Lol. I felt the need to share my story. I also wanted to illustrate some of the similarities in our upbringings and how that doesn't have to be your life if you're determined to have more for yourself.

I hope you find your way, man. God bless.

                            Re: Welp, I'm in trouble

I'm kind of reading in between the lines here because I don't think you gave us all the details. Duke, it sounds to me like you're failing school. I don't understand why your mother would want to kick you out or is trying to force the military on you with you being a full time student. To me it sounds like she's trying to wake you up.

The fact that you still don't have an ID and you keep putting it off for no reason other than the lines are too long already shows a lack of responsibility on your part.

And you don't have a job? Being a full time student is not a good excuse man(plenty of people in this world are full time students and have a job.. you could AT LEAST have a summer job). Nor is "there aren't any jobs in my area". Come on. There HAS to be something. Have you checked on campus?

Let's stop making excuses here and take action. If you're failing school, then get your **** together man. If college isn't for you, then find something that is. College isn't the end all be all. The military is a great opportunity for people with no direction in life. You could also look into trade schools. Once you complete it, use that and start applying to jobs in that field.

Either way, if not the military, then first find yourself a job. ANY job. Just put some money in your pocket while you decide what you want to do.

Good luck in whatever you decide to do.
