Seriously, Duke - if you need help, let me know. PM me - anything, I don't care.
Duke can order up a replacement birth cerificate online pretty easily, but it's usually a per-state thing as to how long it takes to receive it. I had to order a copy of my son's from WA state, and had it in about two weeks. I had to get one for myself from CA and that took about a month.

Still, Duke needs this document asap so the sooner he starts the process the sooner he can take the next step after that.

Or, a few years from now, you can look back at this situation after getting your ### in gear and smile.
Get an ID, find a job and hit the books harder. You haven't been down that road, why not find out where that leads you?
Just remember, anywhere worth getting to in life isn't easy.

What branch of the military was the recruiter from, or was there a particular branch you were interested in?
I'm not getting complacent. Just glad to have a place to stay while I get my affairs in order.

      The branch was the Navy.

Man, you need to break that cycle of irresponsibility off your blood line. Get a copy of your birth certificate, get an ID and eventually a driver's license. Get a job and continue going to school. Then move out as soon as possible. You need to be around some positive uplifting people. Stay focus and keep your eye on your goals.

You in the type of situation where you need to focus on yourself and start handling your affairs yourself. Family can bring you down and hold you back if they aren't on the same page as you. Keep your head up, today is a new chapter in your life. Break that cycle man.
I know, I'm trying. I fully expect myself to slip up every now and then. But that birth certificate thing was like a HUGE WTF am I, or we, doing?

I'm not gonna take you up on that. I respect you too much as an individual.

I have 40 dollars in my pocket and a working cellphone. I'll figure out a way to either grow that money or stretch it on my own. Luckily I still have a free checking account...

Yeah, I live in Louisiana. My birth certificate is all the way in San Diego, California. Going to be a long wait until that comes in.

Trying to look on the bright side of things, this gives me time to study for the actual Asvab and get into shape before I ever ship off to bootcamp.

I've seen, met and even know people who had a worse GPA than that and have had no problem getting just a job. Now how they got said a job is another story, but in this job market(depending on what field he would go into if he were to continue)you don't necessarily need to be a Rhodes Scholar or even just the smartest man on the Bus to get a job.

All this should be secondary because right now, he needs to worry about getting his **** together such as the whole ID/Birth Certificate thing and figuring how he can at least put a few dollars in his pocket just to make it thru the week. I hope he does get his stuff straight because I hate seeing young brothers like him(especially with his situation)go thru struggles like this. I definitely understand that all of this is on him for procrastinating and BS'ing around all this time, but I do hope that he turns everything around and in a year or two, he bumps this thread back up talking about how good he is doing and how much everyone's advice in this thread really helped him and made a difference.

It's really not. It's about who you know and how you can call in favors.

The past presidential candidates in the last decade (Gore, Kerry, Bush) were pretty dysmal at school...Gore in particular pretty much flunked out of Vanderbilt.

It's about who you know and how you can market yourself more than anything. It's all about getting that foot in the door.

I'll take the person who's most qualified because a school GPA doesn't hold as much weight in the "Real World" as people think, especially since it's about who you know more than what you know. AKA Politics.

                Dummies/Idiots can get Diplomas too.

I agree with both of you. Just saying that having a good GPA is better than having a bad one. It's not completely worthless to demonstrate that you can achieve academically.

                      Re: Welp, I'm in trouble

Your GPA shouldn't matter at this point while you're still in school (especially just coming off your Freshman year), unless you're maybe doing a work-study program.

There's always ways to make a hustle. I didn't have hardly any money when I was in college either. I was always trying to make a dollar, buying something off someone for cheap and turning it around on craigslist or ebay or whatever. I was taking folks trash out, doing their laundry, DDing, fixing their computers, betting on videogames, anything possible.

In a lot of places, experience counts just as much, if not more than said degree.

That's why a lot of high schools are exposing kids to technical schools to get certification and experience.

Yeah, when I go to college next fall, I'm gonna look for internships immediately. Looking around the Internet and particulary OS it has become clear that experience is by far the most important thing.

DukeC, I'm in no position to give life advice as I am younger than you. That said, just make sure that if you do decide to join the military, make sure it is not a "F U mom" kind of deal. It seems like there is alot of tension between you and your mom and before you make a life changing decision make sure it isn't simply to prove a point; do it to better yourself.

Either way, best of luck in whatever you decide to do.
