Re: Is it Possible to lose interest in Video Games?
I think it comes and goes. I LOVE video games, but recently I found myself playing less and less. Even games that interest me, when I play I just lose interest after a while and don't play for hours any more. I think I've had it before.
It will probably change at some point and I'll play more, then I'll lose interest again for a while and so on. I don't fight it, just go with.My Specs:

I've never been a big gamer type, always a sports gamer. I have logged some hours on the Call of Duty's and Zelda's, but now I almost exclusively play sports games. It's not worth the $60 to buy a game and not be able to play it much. I had a terrible habit of playing halfway through games, too.
I've found the thought of playing games to sometimes be more tantalizing then actually sitting down to play them. Sometimes I can't even finish a game of hockey/football/baseball without getting bored. I typically max out at 1 game per sitting.
In the past I would cut school or call out of work to play all day. Now, I like to believe I'm a semi-responsible human being and don't/can't do that.
It's sad in a way to me. I really do believe, specifically for sports games, that the XBOX/PS2 era was the golden age. Don't get me wrong, these games nowadays are pretty much better in every way, but there was something about that time period. I think the leap from N64/PS1 to those was so stark it took a whole console cycle until that glean wore off. My age probably factored in too (teens).NHL - Philadelphia Flyers
NFL - Buffalo Bills
MLB - Cincinnati Reds

Re: Is it Possible to lose interest in Video Games?
Yeah, it definitely comes and goes. Ever since my youngest was born, and especially now that I have two little munchkins, I don't game nearly as much. However, I try to squeeze it in whenever I can. It's always been my biggest hobbie, and even though I play less than I used to, I still get amped for big new releases.
I'm kind of in a lull right now, but once GTAV comes out, i'll be all in again. Same for the PS4. "All in" has a different definition than it used to, as that just means for a couple hours each night after the kids are asleep. I'd have more time, but i've working my butt off to get in really good shape this year as well, so that takes atleast an hour out of the day 4 or 5 days a week. Working overnights has it's benefits as well, as the wife works at the same daycare the kids go to, so I get an hour or two in the morning as well before I go to sleep (I work overnights). I try to squeeze in a little bit of gaming during that time as well.Comment

Re: Is it Possible to lose interest in Video Games?
My love of sports among other things has killed my overall interest in video games this generation of consoles. Don't have as much time to play game as I used to so during the week when I do game I just throw in a sports game because it'll only take anywhere from 30-60 minutes. So when I do have time to play other games I don't, I just pop in the sports game for an hour and just stare at the TV for the rest of my free time.
I think i'm starting to regain my interest though with things like South Park, KH/FFX HD, PS4, etc. coming out. I just need to try to beat Mass Effect before all that, which is another thing when I do have time games just don't hold me attention like they used to. I think it's because things have changed to more focus being on graphics, etc. that if the game doesn't have a good combat system or something I get bored quickly.Saints, LSU, Seminoles, Pelicans, Marlins, LightningComment

I'm getting there.
I miss the days when we were younger and didn't demand or expect perfection. I used to love NCAA Football (and still do to an extent) but I don't look at it as an entertainment tool anymore, but rather expect an authentic experience of college football.
And then there is the waiting game for the perfect rosters and sliders... There is always a newer roster available, like Scott's ZIPs roster for The Show last year... I was so excited for it and he did such an amazing job, but by the time it was out I was in football mode. Rinse and repeat.
It's my own fault because the truth is, many of us here at OS are a tough crowd to please and I feel like at least for me, I have lost the ability to enjoy games for what they are - a simple break from reality. They shouldn't have to be near perfection in every facet but that is what I have come to expect.
So, I have a choice to make - either enjoy the game and their imperfections or give them up all together. Having two very young sons and another boy on the way, there is no middle ground for anything else because my gaming time is very limited these days.Last edited by 12; 08-04-2013, 12:22 AM.Comment

I went through that faze back around the time when Batman Arkham Asylum was about to be released. My interest in video games was just gone for some reason and I couldn't get into it anymore. Then after Arkham asylum dropped a buddy of mine let me borrow it and told me it was a must play. I was a little hesitant because the desire to play it wasn't really there. So when I finally did play it I don't know what happened but that game flipped the switch for me and it brought back my love for video games for some reason lol.
That was back before my daughter was born and my love for gaming hasn't faded again. I don't play as much as I used to with everything else that's going on and mainly my daughter but I do make time to game and enjoy every minute of it.Comment

Re: Is it Possible to lose interest in Video Games?
Yep. Right now I'm burnt out on most of my games. One problem is that all my games come out around the same time every year. CoD, Madden, Nba all drop from August to November and those are my top 3 usually. So until football season gets me back into madden and Gta drops, I'm not so interested. Been watching Netflix more than anything. On a bigger note, I just don't play the same games I did when I was younger. The amount is Snes and N64 games I had was ridiculous compared to my game collection for 360. But I always come back. I had no Internet for a week so I didn't appreciate what I had until it was gone lol...Student of the game. #Fundamentals

Re: Is it Possible to lose interest in Video Games?
I have lost interest in games. They're getting too hard, too sophisticated. It's a chore to learn and do everything the games can do now. Overwhelming.
And I was never really good at games either, especially the non-sports ones. Sooner or later you realize that it's dumb to buy a game if you're only gonna play it for a couple weeks before giving up.Comment

Re: Is it Possible to lose interest in Video Games?
It's funny to think how my gaming interests have changed. I used to be purely a sports gamer back on the PS2/XBOX. From fall through winter, it was all Madden all day. In the summer, it was MVP Baseball or High Heat. That was about all I played, along with a little bit of Smackdown throughout the year as well.
Something changed when the current gen systems came out. I was discouraged at how badly they screwed up Madden, and at the time, I only had the XBOX 360, so MLB: The Show was out of the question (thankfully I picked up a PS3 eventually and discovered MLB). But something else changed for me with sports games. I stopped playing them for fun and started playing for realism. I'd get frustrated if I didn't get enough walks in The Show, or if my stats weren't perfect in NBA2K. It was less a form of escapism and more me trying to create a hyper realistic simulation. So from there, I turned more to non sports games.
The first Mass Effect was when the tide turned for me. I played it nonstop until I completed the story, then I completed another playthrough right after. I started to turn my attention to other non sports series like Uncharted and Assassins Creed. Since then, other than more recent versions of the Show, i've been almost strictly a non sports gamer.
Thankfully with this years Show, I can actually pull off very realistic stats even if I played every game. It took a lot of tweaking, but i'm finally there. However, I still play it less than other games. Even with the trade deadline going on and being excited for the pennant race in real life, I chose to play through Deus Ex: Human Revolution for a third time the past couple weeks instead of firing up The Show. My interests have just changed.
The new GTA is the best example of this for me. I know for a fact that i'll be able to lose myself in another reality for hours at a time once it drops, and that's just something that I can't get out of sports games anymore. Especially now with GTAV where the level of customization is off the charts, along with some solid RPG elements. RPG's take up the fair majority of my gaming time now, where until I played games like Mass Effect and Oblivion, I never had any interest in the genre.
I can say for a fact that it will be a long time before I completely lose interest in video games, as they've always been my biggest hobby. However, it's not hard to see that I spend a whole heck of a lot less time playing them than I used to.Comment

Re: Is it Possible to lose interest in Video Games?
Yeah it's definitely possible to lose interest. For me a lot of the games lately just don't give me that same nostalgic feeling I got when I was younger. Maybe now that I'm older and I have a better general understanding of the world, I don't get that same sense of amazement, and immersion anymore. Plus having the responsibilities of an adult really can take away from your leisure time, so some days you might only have 1-2 hours to cram your gaming into.
Take a break from gaming, don't force yourself to game out of obligation; maybe after some time away you'll be able to re-discover and find a new appreciation for gaming when you return.Minnesota Vikings

Re: Is it Possible to lose interest in Video Games?
My interest, while never entirely losing it, waivers from low to high depending on my life and surroundings.
When I was growing up in the 80s/90s, I loved games. Final Fantasy, R.B.I/Ken Griffy JR. Baseball, Tecmo Bowl. When I was a young adult just tryin to make it in the world and balance my social life, I didn't have too much time to play but still made sure to get a few games of NFL2K5 each week.
I joined the military and got stationed in Hawaii. It was party city and if my friends and I were too broke to go out, we picked up some cheap booze and played Rock Band till we passed out. Other then those nights thou, I spent maybe 2 or 3 hours a week playing games. I was always out enjoying paradise!
Got deployed to the Middle East for 18 months and Neverwinter Nights let me escape for countless hours with its incredible player content community.
Now I find myself happily single in my 30s. I gave up drinking and spend most of my time either working or getting in better shape so that I can go back into the service and retire. I really can't stand not being close to a beach so most of my free time is spent playing video games again =)Last edited by buickbeast; 08-04-2013, 11:35 AM.Comment

For me, its kind of like a bittersweet moment. Sweet because i can finally focus on improving my school work without the temptation of getting loss in time with video games, but also bitter because the thing that helped me overcome some tough times in my personal life has vanished.San Francisco Giants
