Re: I Need To Learn How To Fight!!!

    T-Magic, just do this:

Learn enough to the point where you DON'T get your *** kicked. Forget trying to give someone an F5 or some Muay Thai or BJJ because ultimately if you ever do get in an actual fight(hopefully you don't)you're main thing is to make sure that you're not the one getting the crap beat out of, especially if you're not the confrontational type in the first place.

You don't need to worry about being an expert or a Blackbelt(regardless of degree)because last time I checked, they're not immune to getting their *** kicked either.

Put me in the camp that says don't put yourself in a situation to be in a fight. When your 26 and you really beat the crap out of someone, you run a pretty good risk of getting locked up for it. I feel like a smart and educated person does not put themselves in a situation to be in a fight, and if your smart you can certainly avoid fighting.

Honestly, what good can come out of being in a fight? Street cred? Seriously your 26, who Cares about that crap anyways? If you beat the crap out of someone then you can go to jail. If you get the crap beaten out of you, you miss time at work and lose money.

Im tellin ya OP, BJJ is your best bet. No punches, no kicks. Its basically self defense. It just gets you into a position that neutralizes the threat of someone fighting you. You dont need to break there arm just get them into a position where they are useless until cops arrive.

Also for people saying 'dont get into a fight'... true.. but it takes 1 person to start a fight not 2

I'd argue that you put yourself in the situation to get into a fight...Usually they're avoidable especially by acting like an adult.

No sober group of adults should just start fighting for no apparent reason...

If your friends get you into fights then maybe you need better friends?

Yeah, it's possible you randomly get jumped by some stranger, but the odds of that happening are pretty rare. Usually you'll have at least 1 chance to get yourself out of there and escape the situation.

If you worry about "keepin' it real" you end up like a Chappelle's Show skit IMO.

Ha, I think that's the main reason he wants to learn. People who've been drinking will start a fight quicker and over more trivial stuff then any other group.

If only the second part was so easy... But seriously, if your friends are always getting into fights, gotta stop chilling with them. I definitely agree there's really nothing cool about getting into a fight as an adult, just negative repercussions and nobody will care the next day at work at the lunch table. Lol

They can still be your friend, but I'm not gonna put my life at risk cause my friend can't hold his liquor....

I'm married, and will have kids someday...I have too much to live for to put myself in terrible situations.

I don't know if it's been mentioned, only read the first page, but Krav Maga is the art of counter-striking. It's extremely effective if you put forth the effort to learn and be disciplined.

Krav Maga is from the Israeli special forces too. They teach you how to mess people up...you will kill or maim people in order to win! Eye gouges, etc. They don't mess around (and nor should they).

In a local fight you'd need to be a bit more careful you don't kill or severely injure someone cause you could get sued.

Yeah, but that's part of the discipline portion. I'm pretty well versed in it, and would never consider using half of what we've been taught, but if you want a style that will allow you to counter someone who is actively pursuing you, it's about the only thing I'd suggest. Some of the techniques, as long as you don't go too far, will end the "fight" before it even gets started, and you can articulate what you did to counter their aggressiveness.

I've had to testify numerous times on use of force due to an arrest in the past. If you don't know when the fight is over, then you can get into trouble with it, as like you said, some of the techniques that are used can incapacitate people pretty quick.

Counter the attack, give yourself an opportunity to restrain and/or walk away. I've tired several people down just by countering everything that they've done, til they gave up

They do have close combat w/ and w/out weapon defense as well. The disarming techniques for weapons are among the best that I've ever practiced. I've used several of the knife counters... luckily I never had to use the gun one.

There's some of the information on our local facility. Two of our academy instructors helped found that place. It's taking off pretty well

When I started 7th grade my dad taught me how to box. The basics are easy to learn you just have to develop quickness and strength with your punches.

Just go to a gym around your area that offers boxing lessons. In most situations if you can duck the first punch thrown and land your first dominant hook then the fight's over. If you have some power behind your hook then you'll be fine.

Oh, no doubt! Krav Maga is awesome! I'd just worry about some drunk kid using it in a street fight and accidentally breaking someone's neck or something like that....

Weapon disarms are excellent to know. I've been the "test dummy" for my boss when he's done some women's self defense classes at work. I know how to take a fall, and he can demonstrate easier on a guy when it's rape defense and whatnot...If a guy has a gun with the finger on the trigger you can break their finger pretty easily.

I'm 25 and never been in a fight. I feel that at my age and my current job it's not best to get into fights. Besides I don't drink so my chances are low of one ever happening.

Muay Thai would be a pretty effective form to learn, if your just looking to defend yourself in a street fight scenario.

Here's what I noticed about authentic tough guys compared to regular dudes (like me).
Regular people hesitate; tough guys don't.
If a tough guy smells trouble, he punches first and asks questions later.
That's why most of their fights only last a few seconds and why they win most of them.

IMO, street fighting is dumb. If you're not going to get paid for it, don't go looking for it.
It's true that some fights come to you, but in today's day and age, it's better to walk away before any real trouble happens.
Nobody seems to fight 1-on-1 anymore. It's all 3-on-1.

But if you think something's going to go down, where you have absolutely no choice but to defend yourself, strike first and get out before anyone gets really hurt.

So learn how to throw a quick, accurate, one-two combo on a punching bag.
And like so many OS members have pointed out, most street fights end up on the ground. If you're strong, just control them on the ground until help comes, or you can get yourself in a position to control them so both you and him avoid being hurt too badly.

But really, your best bet is always to walk away.

See post #35 in this thread.

All I have to say is that you are spot on. As an "ex-tough guy" (I'm too old to want to fight anymore, but unfortunately there still isn't a year that goes by where someone doesn't try to test me) I swear by that philosophy. I never instigate any physical altercations these days (unless there is much cause to, which is rare) but when someone else gets in my face and I feel there is even a 50% chance it might get physical, I am striking first and with great force. The biggest mistake someone can do is push/shove me. That shows me right there that they are ready to get physical and if I don't defend myself then I could get hurt. That is basically an invitation for me to bust their nose and then clock them as hard as I can before they even have a chance to make a fist. If it comes down to them or me, then it is going to be them 100% of the time.

I have had my *** handed to me a few times over the years, sure, but more often than not if you strike first and with great force, you're going to come out ahead.

But yes, not fighting at all is always the best way (that means a lot coming from a guy like me) but despite what some people say/think, sometimes these altercations are simply unavoidable.

I haven't had to hit anyone since last fall and I am grateful for that. I am certainly not looking forward to the next time I have to either. But alas, I know it will eventually happen and when it does, this old dog is still striking first.
