Speedrunning marathon for charity. It's been going on all week and nearing the end, but two days left with some very popular games coming up. Huge Mario block tonight, some Zelda tomorrow and ending with Final Fantasy 6.

Should football cleats work fine for playing softball? I just joined a team and have a pair of football cleats. I know the cleat design is a little wider on baseball cleats, but I'll probably be playing outfield and I won't be moving that fast around the bases. I guess I could just go test them out...

You'll be fine, used my old football cleats in my IM games. Way better then using just normal shoes like some of my friends did. Didn't seem to slow me down any running the bases.

Maybe this should go in the uncommon opinions thread, or maybe not. Not sure. But I hate the whole speed run thing. Not the idea behind it, but the people doing it.

Every time I've watched one on Twitch the person doing it is so freakin annoying its unbearable. Stuff like "I can't believe I screwed up" or "OMG that was so bad, I'm so terrible." Yeah you're so terrible that you can beat Mario 64 in an hour. Shut up! it took me 9 years to beat that game.

Not sure what you mean by "tool", but I was thinking that run looked way too smooth and easy. There were times where it looked like Mario partially passed through enemies (particularly the Venus flytrap things) and then there was the running over the narrow pits without falling down them.

I'm so old, this is the first time I've ever heard of a "speed run", I just thought it was incredible someone went through the game so quickly & efficiently.

The weird thing I detected was when Mario jumped upward off the side of a tunnel, I didn't know that was possible (edit: it was in the 4:30 range, but after watching it again I remembered times where it seemed the same thing would happen for me so whatever. It was still incredible how the player jumped over crevices before seeing the next sequence of characters, then landing and jumping perfectly off a turtle)

Sometimes it's fun to see how far people can break the game without tools or other assistance. When Game Grumps played Skyrim, you could simply use a dinner plate to glitch through doors and large portions of the game .

I'm so old, this is the first time I've ever heard of a "speed run", I just thought it was incredible someone went through the game so quickly & efficiently.

There are tools available for speed-runners. Basically it's a compilation video. They advance through the game frame-by-frame, and they re-do the portions they messed up.

Tool-assisted speedruns also allow further glitches, since it's a frame by frame thing.

There are separate times kept for tool-assisted speedruns and more "legit" speedruns, though both tend to use whatever glitches they can find.

I've never been so distraught after a game of FIFA as I just was.

Just played Netherlands in the Quarterfinals of the World Cup and It was a tie after regulation so we played extra minutes. They scored almost immediately to make it 3-2 and then I scored to tie it with 2 minutes left in extras.

It went to a shootout and It came down to a final shot for me to keep penalty shots going and I hit the cross bar. No matter what, I was over achieving with New Zealand, but it's a heartbreaking way to loose a game.

I wouldn't even talk about it for 5 minutes.
