Re: Off Topic 2014
The lady did my taxes on TurboTax yesterday and says I'm only getting 27 bucks back (I'm in the red after paying for the service).
Didn't sound right to me. Her mom, who has done them in the past, looked it over and came up with the same result.
I have pretty much no clue how taxes work, but I damn sure pay in a lot and was expecting at least a couple hundred back.
Then of course she tells me there was a deduction that her or her mom couldn't explain. Nice to know. The results didn't make sense to me.
I'm checking them out myself with my dad this weekend. He's always done his by hand, and he did mine last year so hopefully we can catch something that they missed or messed up.NHL - Philadelphia Flyers

Nah she didn't submit them or anything. She was texting me while doing them and when she said only $27 I said hold up just let me do them.
Like I said, I'm not sure whether I should be getting a return or not. I get only about 80% of my net pay after tax, so that leads me to believe I should be seeing something. I worked both out of state and in state (grossing probably just a little bit more out of state) last year.
The red flag deduction they couldn't explain was about the amount I was figuring to get. I think they messed up trying to file my state taxes because I worked in two different states. My dad paid in to three different states at one point, so I trust him to know the process.Last edited by slickdtc; 04-03-2014, 08:17 AM.NHL - Philadelphia Flyers

Re: Off Topic 2014
TurboTax is free based on income level, correct?
slick, is $27 the total for both Federal and State refund? Since state returns typically feed off of the federal return then you may be getting hit hard on both states as you'll need to allocated income to each state accordingly.
What do you normally get back? Did she at least have a comparison to last year to look at?

I work in NY but live in NJ, so I get a tax credit for NJ, but fall under NY income tax rates
NJ and PA have a reciprocal agreement where if I worked in PA, I would not be subject to any PA taxes, at all.
More than likely you shouldn't be double taxed as most states that surround each other have some type of special rule that doesn't detract from doing such.
BTW, taking home 80% of your gross is rather high.Comment

Re: Off Topic 2014
My rule is this: If you can't explain why your refund is less/more year to year then you shouldn't be doing them. If the person you're paying cannot explain that to you then you shouldn't be paying them.

Last year I was claimed as a dependent so I ended up owing about a hundred. I think I got $20 back from DE. I have my last 2 years of tax documents, but not in front of me. I also had 4 different employers throughout the year (2 in DE, 2 in PA).
For 2011 I got a $1500 return, but I also was taking classes at the time so I got a fat credit for it. Also, a low income credit. Now I'm wondering if that return was basically all because of the credits. I was under the impression it helped but didn't comprise all of what I got back but it's starting to sound like it was.
Here I was thinking I'm getting bent over seeing only 80% of my gross pay. Man, that's depressing.Last edited by slickdtc; 04-03-2014, 09:21 AM.NHL - Philadelphia Flyers

Re: Off Topic 2014
My taxes are fairly straight forward, but the H&R Block application worked fine for me. I made too much for it to be free, but it was only $20.99 and I got 25% cash back by using my Discover card so it ended up only being about $15.
There are online tax refund calculators that give you an idea of what you should get back. I did them leading up to when my actual documents arrived and they were within $10.
80% of your gross pay just doesn't make any sense unless you are counting for all of your living expenses.Comment

Yeah I'm pretty sure I'm just tax-********.
I'm basically breaking even if things stay as they are, and that's not bad. I just had the mindset I'd be seeing something back, that's the problem.
