It's funny you say that cause there are some from Western Maryland trying to get a spit from the rest of MD. I assume they would be called West Maryland like West Virginia.

Ain't going to happen, but the idea keeps popping up.

I think they just want to exile Baltimore...like if they could set up complicated explosions to perfectly pierce the earth and have Baltimore drift off into the Atlantic you'd have some happy people in that state.

I say make California into two states, North and South California. With the dividing line being somewhere between Fresno and Bakersfield.

I say Western California and Far Western California.

Both west of Hawaii.

It will never happen. Here in New York they have been talking about New York city becoming it's own state for years. It hasn't happened and it won't. I wish it would though.

At least it isn't as bad as the succession talk that goes on in Texas all the time. Would I love for Texas to be a Republic again? Absolutely, but that involves a **** ton of money, dedication, and in the case of going against the world's number one military, lives. While California isn't talking about spiting from the union, it is talking about something that takes a whole lot of money. That's something the state just doesn't have.

It's easy to put up good talk; it's a hell-of-a-lot different to actually follow through. No news...

I don't know why everyone wants Texas to be a Republic again. First it isn't legal. Two for the few years Texas was one it was one of the worst times to live in Texas.

They want it to be independent for a number of reasons. My reasons are my own, but as to your first point legality is decided in a number of independence movements by blood. When I ask people if they are willing to die for the Republic of Texas, I usually get a shifty answer. Anymore, I think that the politicians here would make an even bigger mess than what they can make in Washington, mostly because Washington has to manage everybody.

Although it's fun to think about what would have been, especially if Sam Houston would have known that Texas would abandon the Union so quick into statehood for the Civil War. What if Anson Jones had known that he would never be a United States Senator? What if Taylor not marched to Mexico City and gone behind Santa Anna? Just something to think about...

Constitution says you can't create new states out of existing states.

Lincoln broke the rule with West Virginia, but I gotta imagine this is more complex than simply have California vote on it.

When Texas joined the union it was done under a proviso to split the state into five smaller states.

That's an urban legend. Congress can pass a law that can make a state out of any other state provided that area has a constitution approved by Congress itself. It's like the whole "Since Texas is a former Republic, it can fly its flag over the American flag" thing. You can fly any flag over the American flag, it's just that most people follow the non-binding flag codes.

EDIT: Bonus points if you can name the other three states that were once independent nations.
