Pursuing an NBA Radio Broadcasting Career

My mom used to tell me that if I do something I love then I'll never to have to work a day in my life. I've always had a passion for radio and the NBA so I hope to one day make calling games a career. I was initially inspired by the San Antonio Spurs' play-by-play man, Bill Schoening, who calls games with so much detail that I can literally picture the game without actually seeing it.

I'm currently calling local college basketball games in San Antonio hoping to build my resume so I can eventually work my way up to professional sports. Does anyone here have broadcasting experience or any advice to give someone pursuing their dream?

Here's an example of my broadcasting style which I adopted from the aforementioned Bill Schoening.

Holy cow, man. That's really, really good. That was what I started out pursuing with my degree and have since decided that it's just not for me. Still love it and want to do it on the side, but not as a full time thing. I'd say you're doing exactly what you need to. Getting experience. From what I know (about baseball, which is what I really wanted to do PBP for), there's not a ton of turnover at the top. There are only 30 NBA teams each only needing two broadcasters for radio and maybe two for television, so don't be disappointed if you can't land that dream job right away. Another thing I've learned is to be flexible. Learn everything you can about radio. Learn to work the soundboard, the phones, etc. If you know your stuff behind the scenes, then you'll be super attractive to radio stations and it'll help you get your foot in the door (which it seems you've already done quite a bit of.). I'll tell ya though, you've got a fantastic voice for it and I have confidence that one day we could be hearing you on the radio calling some professional basketball.

Thank you so much for the great advice. You're absolutely right about the limited opportunities available, but I'm being patient and trying to make the most of the opportunities I currently have while absorbing as much information that I possible can. I really appreciate your insight and encouragement, thanks again.

Man, a lot of people on OS have really lofty dreams lately.

Having said that, after listening to your video, you probably have the best chance out of them all. You're really good, and if you stick with it you can only get better.

The important question, is would you accept a job offer from the Mavericks? lol

So you're telling me that the voice I heard wasn't the actual in game announcer? Seriously dude, you have a golden voice.

That's the absolute best thing you can do. It won't happen overnight. Keep working your way up. Put your name out there. Make sure you get your resume to as many places as possible. Make a demo reel (I can't stress this one enough. Make sure you have a demo that showcases just what you can do) and get that out there as well. That's the best way to realize your dreams. You've seriously got a ton of talent. Best of luck to you!

Re: Pursuing an NBA Radio Broadcasting Career

Just to echo previous comments, you definitely have a voice for it, and the more you continue to work on your craft the better it is going to get.

The thing I won't knock you for was the forced emotion, because I know it is difficult to inject real emotion into a video game. You are one of the few online game commentators who I could see having a future in broadcasting.

Off topic but there is a british guy who does PES games who is fantastic as well.

                          You are amazing!

You could also try and get into sideline work and other stuff to slowly move yourself up the ladder. Also good to do sports talk radio for experience, but I don't know if that'd translate to the play-by-play aspect much.

I agree with that for sure, but to answer this last part, they're two different animals. For play-by-play they like you to have previous PBP experience. This is coming, of course, from my own experience. There are definitely parts that overlap, preparation comes to mind first, but for the most part, PBP guys can (and do) do sports talk, but when it comes to guys who do strictly sports talk and don't have PBP experience, well that's a bit tougher sell. But I would say to for sure branch out and do both (marketability, you know), but if you're more interested in play by play, then I would make sure that you keep getting as much experience with that as you can.

Makes total sense. Sounds like you're doing what you're doing, and you have a great voice for radio. That youtube vid was pro quality IMO. If anyone has a shot I'd say you would.
