    Re: Ebola

Emergency crews at the Boston airport because of a flight from Dubai that just landed that had apparently 5 people on board with flu like symptoms.

Welp. Let's hope there were no other "protocol breaches."

Here is why to me it's so troubling.
Not only the actual patient to caregiver transmission...but the person who doesn't realize they are infected(like this 26 y.o. nurse).....who comes in contact with XXX number of people....and they come into contact with XXX number of people....and.....

That's the first thought i had when I heard about the "protocol breach" when it was basically just one person....If there are a lot more people who have Ebola and don't know it and spreading it around well....

            We're screwed.
I don't think "we're screwed"....even it that begins to happen.
However.....if this disease does get out into the general population it could be a serious problem IMO.
As much as the news might be hyping it up......I think the fed and state governments are downplaying it way too much.(to the public).

Just this morning....on my way home from work....I was standing in line at Starbucks when the girl first in line....didn't realize the woman in front of me was right behind her...the first girl started to sneeze and turned around to keep it from hitting the cashier. She LITERALLY sneezed right into the face of the woman in front of me.(I keep the 3-4 foot rule). The woman in front of me was going off about it!

              Re: Ebola

At this point it still isn't something you should worry about too much IMO. Not trying to take the issue lightly but just from raw numbers, there have only been a little over 8k reported cases. That is nothing given the worlds population. You have a far higher chance of getting struck by lightning right now than you do of coming in contact with Ebola.

Right at this moment that may be (though I really don't know how you test that). However, if we as a nation take too cavalier an approach to this, that is when bedlam occurs. Overall, we've been too reactive in recent times. That's not the USA by and large..... it's proactive time.

Again...that is in regions with small populations and very little travel.
                  Isolated.

I don't like to think of even one person in a densely populated city that is very mobile.
(not to even mention ....cold and flu season.....where someone might not even think they could have been infected)

I think it is easier to get then the news is leading on to avoid mass hysteria. I mean, the nurse was covered in the protect gear and disinfected but she still got it...

Depends... is lightning in your area? Is a person with Ebola in your area?

Even in Africa I'd be willing to bet you have a higher chance of getting struck by lightning, if not it's at least close. You guys need to consider the amount of people there actually are in this world vs the very tiny small number of people that have Ebola right now.

Let me emphasize that my "we're screwed" is not one of mass death and apocalyptic nonsense but that it'd be a huge problem in the vein of an epidemic that spreads quickly but can be contained if, and I stress the word IF the authorities are quick and diligent about getting everything under control.

Otherwise I agree with just about everything you've been saying recently. I do think the news people and authorities are downplaying this far too much but it's a fine tight rope to walk. If you blow it up to a huge proportion than people are going to be very irrational. If you ratchet up the awareness and vigilence that may be required than you're going to get some people freaking out and especially with social media you'll end up with crazy rumors and people acting way too foolish for their own good.

My only point is I live in a location where lightning does not strike the ground, so yes I think I have a fairer chance at getting Ebola because I have literally no idea if someone by me may be contracted with the virus.

In other words, if probabilities only lie in numbers for how many have versus how many people there are, then it's kind of a weird statistic to throw out there anyway. I get the point you're making though.
