    Water smells funny

Hey guys I am at my wits end with this so I figured I would check here before I spent money on this issue.

Last week my wife noticed that the water coming out of our brand new fridge had an odor to it, kind of a rotten smell to it. The weird part is it is only the water. The ice is fine, even let it melt to check. All of the tap water in the house, including showers and toilets are fine. It is only the water out of the fridge.

There is no rotten food in the fridge, I have even cleaned it out and bleached the inside. I have a new filter in the fridge as well. Stainless steel water line from the wall to the fridge. We are on well water but again this is the only thing that has an odor. The water actually tastes fine it just smells.

This problem just started one day. No build up or anything it just started to stink. Not as bad now, but I dont really think we should be drinking water that smells?

I have looked on line and really didn't find any help and I dont want to call a plumber and spend a couple of hundred dollars if they cant figure it out.

    Any help would be appreciated.

I have no advice but my city water is a light color brown and smells. They claim it's safe for you though.

Have you let the water run a while? Is the odor the same on lets say the third cup as the first one?

You don't think it's from the new filter? When I installed my new filter I had to run it for around 20-30 min for it to go away but that was more taste than smell.

Usually I let the water run, a few gallons worth when I change out the filter.

I did that and tossed 3 batches of ice even though there was no smell from the ice.

If it's just confined to the fridge....I would think it's likely the filter....but you might want to test it anyway with a home test kit.
I can't see how it can be contaminated ....from the fridge itself....but better safe than sorry!

I am going to go another direction, since it is confined to the water dispenser and not the ice, it's probably not the filter. My best guess would be, since the water isn't treated, it's allowing something grow near the spout. How to fix? Not sure, my fridge the filter sits in a little cup, so I could take that filter out, turn off icebreaker, fill cup with bleach, run it until the bleach is exhausted.

I might give this a try. The only problem is my filter is in a separate compartment and just run to the water line. Maybe I can unhook the line from the wall, fill a bucket with hot water and bleach and just run it through.

Maybe I should use a white vinegar solution so as to not damage any delicate parts?

Thanks for the input guys I appreciate it.
