I heard this question discussed on the radio all week long, so I decided to bring to OS.

Scenario:

Girlfriend and boyfriend. His tax refund is $1,200. Her tax refund is $5,500 because of child credit. None of the kids are his. Should she share the money with him and pool both tax refunds together or should she just keep all of her's to herself and spend it as she sees fit ?

Me personally my train of thought is that if you 2 are living together, pool it together as common house money and use it for things for the house. If you 2 don't live together then keep the money to yourself.

Split it as you normally would do for the common house.

I don't think she would outright give him money just for himself, though.

Any money I make is essentially my wife's and vice versa, at least that's how it is in our marriage. We both have full time jobs and we don't spend on things we don't need. When we feel the need, we run it by each other. For example, we want a Wii U right now but know that's $300 or so that we'd be more comfortable having in our savings account racking up a penny a day! We wouldn't play the Wii U enough to justify it over putting it in savings, anyway.

It's always been this way. It's just trust, really. I know that if I'm tight on money, she'll help me make my bills just the same as I would for her. We actually have separate accounts but a joint savings. It's been discussed before, she actually wanted to combine accounts because that's just the way she thought. After talking about it, and hearing other people talk about it, we've settled on separate accounts. It's not about hiding what I'm spending money on (food... I love food...) but more about staying organized and on track with my bills. I don't know her bill schedule so it just makes it easier this way.

So my answer would be, if that relationship is a good one, they should keep their money separate but share the refunds.
