    Re: Off Topic 2015

I keep getting an error message saying no search results are available with the current filter. Sometimes I can get an episode to pop up, but most of what I find are what I already have recorded.

I haven't used OD for several months, but I don't remember having this much trouble with it. My receiver is on a wired connection and resetting the box does not resolve the issue. I've seen some threads discussing this, but nothing official.

      Off Topic 2015

Man, being offered an, essentially, bottom unit of a house for a couple hundred less then what we're currently paying for our 1-bedroom apartment. All things included like electricity, heat, water, and even cable.

The drawback is, it's the in-law's. They're turning their basement into an apartment with separate entrance, bathroom, bedroom, and living space (bigger then our current place). The only thing, and it's kinda a biggie, is we'll have to share an upstairs kitchen. There's an option to have a little nook in our space for mini-fridge and other appliances (Keurig, panini press, microwave, toaster oven) but the stove and oven and dishwasher will all be shared. I don't mind sharing the burden of essential groceries like milk, bread, etc but I want to make sure we don't get roped into anything. We've been on our own for years now, so that would be... unpleasant.

We'll be saving close to $500 a month. We have a good relationship with them and they've assured us it'll be a separate, non-intrusive spot. The last thing I want to do is move back in with anyone's parents, but at that price and with those assurances, it's hard to pass up. Free babysitters too for when we're ready to start our family.

For the record, I lived over there for 6 months a couple years ago before we got married and it didn't end so well. The MIL is kinda crazy, but we have a great relationship even with past transgressions and a lot has changed on both ends since, mainly her chilling out and me just becoming a more mature man and now-husband. As long as it's understood that we have separate living spaces I think I can deal with the inevitable amount of extra contact we'll have with them, and at the price I think it'll be worth it. I basically just want it understood that I don't want them down in our space whenever they want to be. We will be housing the washer/dryer so it's gonna happen (just like we'll have to use the kitchen), but I don't want or need them just dropping in. In passing is fine.

Now tell me this is a terrible arrangement and I'm crazy for thinking it'll actually work out and be worth the money saved. [emoji52]

There's a guy in my parking lot with a van full of junk, he takes the stuff out, smashes it on the ground, picks the pieces up and puts them back in the van. I can't figure out why he's doing it but I can't stop watching I have the best neighbors

I kinda wish I knew you could switch classes yourself in 1st semester. I had a schedule I hated right off the bat. 8am class on my very first day. So it was bad enough waking up earlier than I was use to(seeing how high school and everything was always 9am start),but then having other classes right after so I didn't finish till after 4pm,sucked.

Though once I started choosing my own classes,I got so much better times. Unless I was forced to,I never chose a class before 10am. And never chose one that ended after 4pm.

lol, choosing your own schedule spoils things way too much. Though worst ones are when you sign up for a class, and it gets cancelled(cause not enough ppl signed up). It really messes things up cause you signed up for other classes according to which fit on the schedule based on days/times, but with 1 class being forced to change, you had to change up other things too,and since the change happened late, there were next to no options available cause everything else was booked up.

Your high school didn't start until 9 AM? That's late, what time did you get out? My middle/high school started at 8:15/8:05 then let out at 2:52/2:56 (Schedule was redone between 8th & 9th grade to add an 8th period).

I did my best to avoid 8 AM classes in college when I could, but didn't really mind it when I couldn't avoid them.

I never had a problem with classes being cancelled because not enough people signed up. I actually had kind of the opposite problem spring semester of my junior year. There was this 100 level psychology class that I needed to take for my minor and it filled up with seniors before I even got a chance to register (each year registered separately starting with seniors then juniors then sophomores then freshmen). I think even the psych dept. staff was stunned that a 100 level class filled up with seniors and even opened up extra seats but only for freshman/sophomores so I had to wait until my senior year to take that class. As a result I ended up not being able to take the class that I wanted to take as the last requirement for my biology major in the spring of my senior year because the time conflicted with the psych class so I had to take a different class that I was somewhat less interested in.

We had the tables turned on us.

My in-laws were looking for a house on the lake across the boarder. My father-in-law had 6 months to retire and he traveled a lot. They couldn't find a house and they asked us if they could bunk with us and they would pay us $500 a month for storage.

They had their side of the house and we had ours. He was home every weekend if he traveled. A lot of projects were worked on and completed. Every time I came home from dinner during the week, there was a home cooked meal.

The $500 a month helped pay for our gas furnace(we had oil previously) plus central air.

The sad news from this ordeal was that they couldn't find a house on the lake over the boarder. They found a house on the lake 22 minutes away from us. They used to come over whenever they were in the area, unannounced. I wasn't brought up that way, but my wife just shrugged it off.

Yeah, I wouldn't want someone dropping in whenever they wanted. We have cell phones now, shoot me a text/call. Don't just come over. I feel like that's just rude, but also a bit old-fashioned.

FIL is a cool guy and I'll probably be helping him finish up the basement living area (pretty much just have to put in the bathroom... which I imagine is a major pain in the ***). It's the MIL I'm mostly worried about. She's said the right things about knowing the boundaries but there's talk and there's reality. Honestly, I'm pretty mellow and I know it isn't going to be perfect. It's still going to be like having "advanced neighbors." Im not expecting complete serenity.

The biggest thing is what jeremy said, having them in a position of power. The thought of moving back in with anyone's parents isn't that cool, but I've talked to some other people and everyone keeps going back to the money. Hell, if we can bear it for just a couple months we'll have bank saved up to move into a better spot then we currently have. I've always said if I had saved money when I lived at home rent free, I'd have a fat savings account. This isn't exactly that, but it's a soft version.

My wife thought I was gonna dismiss the offer instantly. It's still not set in stone as I try to imagine all the possible issues that could come up. I'm not trying to just jump into this thing. If there's one thing I know, it's that you need stability within your living arrangements. I'm not trading a good place that we have now for a downgrade.

I like getting home early, but really,it's not that great getting home real early after school(specifically during winter months). I'd rather stay up abit later and wake up later than get home early. Once I get there,I'm fine and all,so I'd rather get there feeling awake and maybe tire out near end of day, then half asleep for beginning part of day and wide awake by end. Though not too late either. I'd rather go 9-3 than 8-2. 10-4 even would be nice.

How many classes did people have? Cause I had 4 per semester. So you'd start at 9am,class were about 80 mins. Then 5 mins afterwards to get to class #2. The second that ends, lunch begins. Then after lunch class 3 begins for 80 mins,5 min "travel time" inbetween class 3-4,and another 80 min class. So it'd end after 3pm.

That was the best. Final year getting 1 break period. It sucked alot during winter cause you were forced to stay at school. But a number of people just went home during that. Was nice to do. Get over 2 hours of a break if the break period is right before lunch. Or get to go to school late every day if the break period is the one to start day. Or you leave early if break is final part of day.
