I wish somebody would've yelled at me not to play...my left shoulder is still about 75% tops. The only saving grace is I'm right handed. Easily worst experience of my life.

I haven't been able to play since I moved out of the parents' house. I was excited when I bought a house this spring, but the damn telephone wire is about 8 feet off the ground at the only appropriate spot in the driveway for a goal.

        Re: 2015 FITNESS CHALLENGE

I hit the gym last night and decided to run some "suicides" rather than hit the treadmill or elliptical.

Well, I act it actually made my own version of suicides where I had to hit a layup, free throw, 3 point and half court shots and running while dribbling to touch the baseline in between each missed shot. Then once I hit the half court shot sprinting to the other side of the court and starting over.

It was a good way to get my conditioning and basketball skills back to where they should be.

Oh and hearing the net swish in an empty, quite gym is one of the sweetest sounds in the world (maybe this should go in the Pleasures of Life thread).

Man the last few posts in this thread have got me itching to play some Basketball. Too bad it's almost winter and that cold weather is setting in. I don't know of any in-door courts around me.. that aren't like a High School and currently in use for teams.

I hate that tax season runs concurrently with rec-league ball. That and you need to form your own teams and I do not know of more than 2 people who would go in.

How do you guys feel about resistance bands? Thinking of picking up some Bodylastics bands, as I rarely have time to hit the gym for free weights.

Anyone seen any success using primarily bands? I'm not looking to bulk up, as my primary goal is to get back into the shape I was in when I ran the Spartan Beast last year, but I'd like to use them to improve my overall strength.

Bands are great for gaining muscular endurance, and mobility drills, but it's tough to structure an entire workout around them.

I use them to warm up, and do mobility work prior to my main workouts. If your goal is overall fitness I think you should also add in something with Kettlebells, and or free weights alongside body weight exercises, and some form of high intensity cardio. (Jump roping)

Oh yeah, I plan on supplementing with other workout tools, primarily kettlebells and (weather permitting) battle ropes. Muscular endurance will be a big benefit for the race. Two years ago, they linked together about 5 straight pure arm and grip strength obstacles at like mile 13 (chain pull, herculean hoist, staggered monkey bars, rope climbs, etc) and despite being in the best shape I've ever been in, my arms started to fail me. Slipped off the monkey bars due to a combination of mud and a compete failure of my grip strength.

I'm hoping for more pure strength gains with the bands than anything.

I've been using bands recently and they are a nice supplement to bodyweight exercises. I've got varying degrees of resistance, so I can do high, medium and lower repetitions.

I find Pull-ups are the single best exercises for increasing grip strength.

Before I could do strict form pull-ups I started with a dead hang hold, then did just the negatives of the rep starting the rep standing up on a box, and I would overload with Banded pull-ups as well after I couldn't do anymore regular form. (Band assists the movement by taking away some of your bodyweight)

Grip strength improved, and it also brought up my back quite a bit. Some people don't have access to a pull-up bar if they are doing home work outs, but I was able to find one at a local park.

Ugh my Squat progress has stalled. But not because of lack of effort on my part; it's the struggles of my Gym. I go there with the intention to Squat, but with there only being 1 squat rack and multiple people always wanting to use it. I usually have to forego it and my Lower body workouts have consisted of Leg Press, Hack Squats, Dumbbell Romanian DL's, Cable Pull throughs, and Lunges. I get it in... but still doesn't help my Squat when I'm not able to get under that Bar and put that overload on my Body.

I even came in 3 straight days with the intention of Squatting last week and couldn't do it:

Monday - group of Three guys camped out with their Bags, (not allowed on gym floor in this gym) Chalk and other gear all on the floor. Squatting asked them how long they would be and they said "We're all working in together so we'll be a while." So I proceeded to just do other exercises and they took like 45 minutes, and someone else came by the time they were done.

Tuesday - came earlier in the day no luck group of Teenage girls were squatting, not a lot of weight like 60 lbs. Guess it was their Winter break cause they looked like they were HS seniors or freshmen in college. I did like 5 sets of Hyper extensions, and when they were finished I walked over to the Squat rack and another girl that had been waiting nearby came to use it, we both kind of got there at the same time and kind of Looked at each other; but I just let her use it. I'm not going to kick a girl off the Squat rack and be a ****. I did upper body the rest of my workout.

Wednesday - Came later after work, which is always a busy time; and just on cue there was literally like a line of 5 guys all waiting to use the Squat rack. Either for Squatting, Overhead press, or doing rack pulls or whatnot. I didn't even bother and did machines.

This is at Gold's gym and I'm getting fed up with these Commercial gyms. 500 machines, 500 treadmills and ellipticals, but only 1 Squat rack. The Retro Fitness closer to my House is the same way. I can't build Big legs without doing Squats, and Deadlifts; and when it's busy there's almost no space to Deadlift anywhere. These commercial gyms are all about looking pretty and having lots of cool looking machines to get memberships, and then people stop going and don't even cancel their memberships...

I need to find like a legit Power Lifting Gym, or Olympic Weightlifting Gym. Where they have Multiple Squat racks, Power Racks and actual Deadlifting platforms. That way I know when I go to the gym I don't have to wait for a Rack, or Bench...

                              /end rant.

The Gold's I used to go to also only had 1 squat rack, too. Strange. They had 2 platforms for DL's, which was helpful.

I just picked up an indoor trainer for my bike. Looking forward to using it since I haven't been able to ride outdoors with all the cold weather and snow.
