    Re: 2015 FITNESS CHALLENGE

It really is amazing how much getting down to a certain weight changes running performance. I don't just mean in terms being fat killing cardio and speed/efficiency. I played football in high school, and rugby from that time until I was 27, and it was always about living in the sweet spot between size, and cardio.

Anyway, long distance running was always a pretty challenging activity long-term. I could do it, but I was constantly afflicted with leg pains and things like back problems. Once I dropped below 160lbs all the problems went away permanently. Zero joint and tibia problems, and am now at a really at a great spot between strength from a lifting routine, and distance running. I haven't been this weight since I was like 13 years old.

To anyone with joint problems from running, I'd suggest it's possible you could drop your weight down a bit more and be rid of them.

      Re: 2015 FITNESS CHALLENGE

Apart from the first month I've pretty much stopped working out at the new house and opt to do lawn work in the evenings. Unfortunately, it shows and I want to get back on track and reverse my current path.

I know what I want to do work-out wise by incorporating yoga, more ab-work, and some weight-lifting to supplement my old Insanity routines.

What I really need help with is coming up with a solid and attainable meal plan. I know there are rules I can make and adhere to, but I know my overall food habits need an over-haul. Any suggestions or recommendations you guys can give will be great. I did great when I lived alone and could control what came into the house hold, but living with someone else and having a mother-in-law that is a pretty awesome cook has certainly ruined whatever good food habits I had.

Is the paleo diet a worthwhile change or is portion control and limiting bad foods enough?

        Re: 2015 FITNESS CHALLENGE

I think downloading the myfitnesspal app and counting calories is a huge help. It just helps to make you think about everything you put in your body, and it removes most of the guesswork. And I've found that if you eliminate the foods that are completely useless like soda, it really isn't that difficult. You can still eat good food, you can still drink alcohol, you can still eat huge meals from time to time, it's just a matter of spreading those things out.

And even if you don't want to count calories forever, I still think it's extremely helpful for doing it a couple of weeks and then it makes it much easier to just guesstimate it from there.

I actually still have the app on my phone and used it for awhile last Spring and Summer. I stopped using it because a lot of the foods I was preparing for myself I couldn't find and I would just end up guessing at the calories.

21 Day fix by Beachbody is the real deal. Both my wife and I are seeing amazing results. Portion control is the key along with working out.

Been there done that and it sucks. Hard to breathe depending on the location. My hip flexor is going to require surgery but I'm going to see if another month will help me avoid that.

Yeah, left side and wraps around to my lower back. Hard to move for several days. Sleeping was a challenge, too. Had a bit of a breakthrough last night and today in that, while still in pain, I am able to do more everyday movements without sharp pain. Breathing has also improved.

Tripped on a luggage strap after hopping off my co-worker's flatbed. Fall didn't hurt and originally I was more concerned with my hand getting scraped up. It wasn't until I got in the truck and sat down that I knew something was wrong. The next day is when the pain really kicked in.

Can only imagine what broken ribs feel like because this is bad enough.

Hoping to try running by the weekend. Doctor said its up to me how much I can do (pain tolerance) when it comes to exercise. I'm getting antsy, so want to give it a couple more days and then test it out. If it hurts too much, I'll just walk.

I broke three ribs in a dirt bike accident. Survived the 60 foot fall which sounds unbelievable. Spleen was cut, ribs broken, swelling on my right side brain and it took 9 months to be able to walk again. I can tell you that when I woke up on the ground prior to the Medevac Helicopter arrival, it was like breathing thru one of those coffee straws that are used to stir the coffee. I was wearing full gear from head to toe and it was all blown off of me. The dirt bike imploded to pieces when it landed on my back. Probably why my hip flexor is causing me problems right now lol.

Hip flexor is a mother ****er. I injured it during hs football and suffered for a decade. Yoga fixed it for me within 6 months though.

No kidding! Then I am going back to Yoga tonight. Doc's option was either surgery or deal with the pain. I am choosing other options so thanks for that tidbit of information.

Really focus on poses like all the Warrior poses,Swan, lower lunge and back bends.

Also get into a class with a good teacher. I had a good one who corrected the poses and push poses to go further and basically helped heal me from chronic back problems, hip flexor and shoulder injury. I even got over depression which was craziest thing because I didnt understand the mental part of until a few months of doing it constantly.

You just covered all of my issues right now. I'm self conscious around others when it comes to working out in an area such as yoga where it brings out my weaknesses. Thanks as I will do my DDP Yoga every night now.
