World Video Game Hall of Fame (inaugural class) Finalist

Let the debate begin!! (Pick only one)

    The Good

    The Bad

    The Ugly

    Huge Ommision

    For me

The Good: Pong: That is where it started for most

The Bad: FIFA: FIFA didnt really turn the corner until FIFA 12. That is 2 decades of mediocrity. Cant do it for the 1st class.

The Ugly: Minecraft: Launched in 2009?? HOF in 2015?? Ask me again in 10 years. To many more deserving games.

Clear Ommision: Tecmo Bowl: Gotta be the first sports game in
I dont remember there names but they were allot of fun....

GOOD: Sonic and Mario being in the inaugural class is a no brainer but it's good that those two giants will be there to establish credibility. Although, I must say if Mario and Sonic were real you'd probably need a security team there to make sure they don't go to blows

BAD: Gotta agree with your stance on Minecraft. While it's wildly popular and a great game (so I hear, it just doesn't appeal to me) it doesn't have that imprint that Angry Birds (another game from '09) had.

UGLY: No Street Fighter II? tsk tsk

Good call on street fighter. Mortal Kombat doesn't happen without Street Fighter.

The Good: I'll stick my head out there for Minecraft. It's a global phenomenon as big as any we've ever seen in gaming, it popularized the "crafting" mechanic which is finding its way into more and more games, it re-popularized retro / simple graphics, it was a triumph for the independent game development community, and it has crossover appeal as an educational tool. One can legitimately use Minecraft to teach formal logic, teaching kids how to wire AND gates, OR gates, flip-flops, ALUs, etc. going all the way up to people building a playable version of Minecraft within Minecraft (yo dawg). Few popular video games can make the claim of being such a robust and extensible thing. It's well worthy of its inclusion here.

Also will stick my neck out for DOOM; the first-person shooter genre as we know it doesn't exist without DOOM.

The Bad: The one that sticks out to me the most is Oregon Trail. It certainly was a popular game in schools, but it didn't do anything to fundamentally change video games as far as I know.

The Ugly: Well, uh, Pong. It's undoubtedly important, but easily the ugliest game of the group lol.

              The Ugly: Angry Birds.

Seems to me that it was just a passing fad, which doesn't meet the longevity criterion. It shouldn't be near the finalist list, IMO.

The Good: PONG. Sure we can look at it know and say "boring". But, at the time, there was nothing like it. Opened the door.

The Bad: Angry Birds. Never played it. But no one gets into the HOF only 6 years after its' appearance.

The Ugly: FIFA. What? It's soccer. C'mon. Seriously, though, it was like any other sports game. As a franchise, I don't know, but I didn't think that was the criteria.

Huge Ommision: Galaga. Space shooter crack.

I don't really like Angry Birds personally, but I think its impact on how mobile games were treated by developers is colossal.

I'm pretty sure Angry Birds was the first game to popularize the "freemium" model, where the initial game was released for free with in-app purchases to unlock more levels (though there was also a paid version of the original game which unlocked everything, if I recall). The popularization of this model of game fundamentally changed how developers looked at mobile.

Angry Birds also validated the idea of touchscreen mobile devices such as iPhones as a legitimate video game platform, albeit for games cut from a different cloth than console standalones. It paved the way for games like Doodle Jump, Cut The Rope, Flappy Bird, Threes, Fruit Ninja, Clash Of Clans, Temple Run, Draw Something, and Candy Crush Saga. These games - all massively popular - quite possibly don't exist without Angry Birds proving the iPhone and Android phones were legitimate gaming devices.

I don't like it but so much, but based on how it caused a paradigm shift in the gaming industry it's plenty deserving of its place amongst these other games IMO.

BTW if they really wanted a sports franchise in the initial class they should've put Madden in there. it's the game that basically made the sports gaming industry what it is today.

To steal from you a bit...

I'll stick my neck out for Oregon Trail.....

It was a survival game...before survival games even knew they existed!

You had to hunt and store......you could die of various calamities and encounters.....

I believe I read somewhere that it sold over 50 million copies(granted...a lot to schools and it's been on sale since the '70's!)...but that's still 50+ mil!

I don't understand why Pitfall never gets any love, it was a landmark console game.

                              Anyway...

The Good: ****ing Super Mario Brothers and Sonic, dudes. Most, if not all, gamers have played and enjoyed these games over the years. Only makes sense to put the originals in there.

The Bad: Angry Birds. Sure, it gave us a mobile game that was really addictive, but it doesn't deserve recognition with Pong, Mario, Sonic and others does it?

The Ugly: Look, I understand why FIFA is there, because of the global economic force that it is, but FIFA for many years was a joke while PES kicked it's literal ***. FIFA's rebound was really good, but I cannot take a franchise like that seriously.

Huge Ommision: There are a lot. Since they seem to want to put in whole franchises...Man, I cannot imagine why Final Fantasy didn't get in there. The original RPG, while it has the same flaws that FIFA has recently, is still an iconic franchise that I think many gamers recognize and have at least tried. Also of note, no fighting games, particularly MK and SF is a huge ommision too. Also...****ing Madden? I'd put that over FIFA. I think a case could be made for Call of Duty too.
