You guys are putting my $3 to shame faster than I thought

If I had to say another industry ripping people off. It would be the college textbook companies. Those companies and schools work together to force students to buy a "new" $250 textbook, just to use the accesss code inside the book. Add to that the fact that used, previous edition textbooks are exactly the same, and can be 75/80% cheaper, makes me hate them more. They are just thieves laughing to the the bank each semester.

I read something the other day which said textbook prices have went up about 1000 percent since the 80's.

It's about 500-$1000 a year for me. So yes it does suck. If I'm lucky there's certain "sites" that have the PDF of the book, and I can shave off $100 or so from that total. And I don't feel bad about it one bit, it's all a scam.

Jeez. My college debt is just under $30,000, at least that was spread out over 4 years and should help me get a job in which I can pay it back in a reasonable amount of time.

I think I'll take your advice and not get married.

My wife and I got married in Maui. It was just us the wedding coordinator, her husband (who was the officiate) and the photographer. We stayed for a week, did some sort of excursion every day and even had the photographer take engagement pictures while we were there... I don't know the exact number, but we probably made it "out the door" (hotel, flights, rental car, excursions, food, etc.) for 5-6k.

LOL. Dont do it. I'll break this down for you. We had 135 people at the wedding and for some people thats considered a mid-size wedding. Now we did have it at a nice venue (which probably cost us 5-7 more than an average venue)but you still have to factor in the following:

                Florist
                Wedding Dress Cost
                Tux Rental
                Photographer
                DJ
                Videographer (we didnt have one)
                Minister
                Gifts for the guests.
                Rehearsal Dinner

                It can add up quick.

When it comes to non-wedding purchases, the only thing I've overpaid for is getting video games early. I paid 120+ to get EA UFC a few days early. I've paid 100+ for NBA2k too.

I wouldve loved to do that but my family and hers wouldve killed us if we got married on our own.

                    Re: Most you've overpaid...

Weddings are too damn expensive, but my wife loved our wedding and is still with me...so I'll chalk that up to breaking even ($40,000).

As for overpaid, I bought a pair of Jordan's for $300, $100 over retail once. The only other thing I can think of, other than new technology (just bought a new 78inch TV), would be our house. Honest to God, housing prices are ridiculous. Our home (1200 square feet, with finished basement) cost us $400,000 5 years ago. My neighbour bought her home 50 years ago for $14,000. We could easily get over $600,000 for our house right now in today's market. It's bloody ridiculous how much the prices of house are rising in Toronto. We are mortgage free (Thank the Maker), but it should not take most people 25+ years to pay off their home. I don't think it's right, and it seems to becoming almost unattainable for younger people to be able to afford a down payment...God forbid interest rates go up for new homebuyers...rant done...sorry! I just feel bad for those just starting out!
I am the lesson after the fall.

                      Re: Most you've overpaid...

^In terms of house wise ,that's partially why I don't wanna live in the city. Though unfortunately, it might have to be the case cause living in a location I wouldn't mind living, would lead to horrible winters(cause streets get plowed less) and cable companies possibly not being available in some areas.

I know someone who lived near abandoned farmland and they had so much problems just getting internet and cable. Luckily for them they got a phone so they just used that internet on their computer for the time being, but still sucked. And like I mentioned, horrible winters cause of snowplows not being there much, their car even got stuck a number of times cause of that.

Though for summers, I wouldn't mind living in a somewhat remote area with lots of land. I don't mind the extra yardwork that'd come along such as mowing a big lawn(using a tractor to do so),driving abit more to go shopping, and things like that. Would rather that, than to get a house that'd cost about 50% less than a house in the city.

                          Re: Most you've overpaid...

We limited our wedding to 17k-ish. We were trying for 12k, but things obviously go up easily.

We didn't want to go into debt, and we also wanted to buy a house (which we did before wedding), so had to budget well. We did a buffet style dinner vs. individual plate which saved. Our photographer was her mom's cousin that was a killer pro photographer, we just paid her airfare and hotel costs.

Even keeping it lower was still tough. Though that did include our rings too...those add up fast.

For me it would have to be some textbooks I have used for college. But I have been lucky and not paid much for books maybe $300 for the whole year (both semesters). I think I am like $20K in debt after I finish this year.

In college the day before a UConn football game I lost my student ID. This was a Friday afternoon and the game was on a Saturday, so the office to get a new one was closed. To get into the game with your student tickets you need to show your ID. I went to the game anyway, figuring they'd let me in, or worst case I could find a ticket in the parking lot, there's always scalpers, and usually for cheap.

So I went to the game, which is about 30 minutes off campus, and since I figured they'd probably let me in I tailgated up until game time. Tried to get in, they wouldn't let me, I went to talk to the head of security who was a total dick, and didn't let me in either. Unfortunately this was one of the few UConn football games that was sold out, so I couldn't just go to the ticket office, so a scalper was my only option, and if I didn't buy a ticket I pretty much had to just chill in the parking lot by myself for 3 hours. In my drunken state I panicked and bought the first ticket I could find, no negotiating or anything for $100, which was $95 more than my student ticket was. And since all my friends were in the student section I sat there instead of the much better seat I paid for.
