Re: Self-conscious about my lack of success

Hey PW. I wish I had sagelike advice or any wisdom at all to send your way. Just know that I have read this thread and kind of lurked, but I feel for you bro. I think we are similar in some ways. I am rooting for you and truly hope things work out.

I am in a pretty bad situation currently, and I don't feel very cool, to put it lightly, but for it's been important to keep applying and interviewing everywhere possible even if I keep getting turned away. I feel one day you and I will both convince someone of our true potential and get that chance to prove it.

Or PW, as a suggestion, you can try contacting the hiring manager or HR and let them know you sent in your resume and if they received it.

Tell them you are following up and would like to know where you stand in relation to the opportunity, espeicially if you know you are very qualified for the opportunity.

Try calling on off times to reach HR or the hiring manager, either early in the morning or right before lunch. If you reach voice mail, let them know who you are, repeat your phone # twice and tell them you are following up on your resume. And if you can, briefly let them know why you are qualified.

If they bring up your resume, you can let them know they you feel you are a good fit for the opportunity and tell them why.

This is considered a phone interview initiated by you. If you are interested in pursuing further, ask them what the next step is. Phone interview, face to face, etc.... They may even try to arrange an interview with you on the phone.

It does sound like it'd be a good idea to take a closer look at your resume anyway, but even if you determine it's still accurate, maybe make a small change here or there and resubmit wherever you have it listed anyway.

Guys, I am going to try to reword my resume a bit and I was thinking of doing that when I posted my last response. I just would like to know if any of you guys have ever used a professional resume writing service? I am considering that.

Thanks, Jarebear! I feel what you are saying about continuing to apply. It's a numbers game, anyway. It's almost like fishing. The more you put your line out there, the more chances you have to catch the big fish. I hope your situation improves !!

Roadman, I have tried calling a few companies back and I have left voicemails but none of them have returned my calls. I am going to keep trying this approach to try to make myself stand out, though. Nowadays, it is not enough to just apply and sit back but you can't be over-aggressive either. I have heard that the latter can actually turn HR reps off from interviewing you.

In the voice mail, give them specific times when you will be home or by the phone, like 8 to 10 or 1 to 3 and you would like to hear back from them.

I have used a professional service years ago. It was well worth the expense, even though I didn't end up leaving my job. It's a good starting point, and you can then customize to fit specific opportunities. Also, seeing how they condense and prop up different aspects can help you moving forward. Most importantly, they are paid to paint you in a better light... considering that's hard for you to do yourself right now, it can feel good to see this person on paper you didn't know, or forgot existed.

Yes, a tactful following up is a good idea and you should always do that with any potential job that you are very interested in.

I never have used a professional resume writing service, but I have always been lucky in having a ton of friends who are HR professionals at large companies. I would think that if you do the proper research on some resume writing services, you will probably find one that will be very beneficial to you.
