re: Off Topic: The Posts Of Summer

The big difference among the recent lockouts is the NHL is the only one that lost its playoffs/championship. The NBA would have been hurt a lot more if it canceled the playoffs/finals, but all sides were smart enough to reach a deal before that happened.

The NHL would still be fourth without the lockout, but I don't think the gap would be quite as wide as it is now.

I've watched way more of the NHL playoffs this year (even not including the Pens) than the NBA playoffs. I've barely watched any of the NBA Finals. Just too predictable these days.

I think exposure is big. But the NHL made their decision that they wouldn't be a major sports league powerhouse like NFL/MLB/NBA when they went with NBC after the first lockout. Don't get me wrong, I think NBC has done a fine job the last ten years and it obviously has paid the league and teams well.

But NBC is not synonymous with sports. ESPN is. And when you aren't on ESPN, you are dead to ESPN. The hockey content on ESPN is laughable, and I think it's part by design and part because why cater to an audience that isn't nearly as big as the other leagues? There's no good reason for them to push a sport they have no investment in.

With all that said, ESPN has the rights to the World Cup of Hockey this September. You may have seen their goofy commercials. But it could be a sign they want back in. I'm certainly looking forward to checking out the tourney even if most fans think it's a complete bastardization. I mean, there's teams based on country as is typical of international tournaments, but then there's a couple of teams made up from leftovers (Team Europe) or age restricted (Team North America, though there's still a Team USA and Canada). It kinda makes sense, why throw in some also-ran countries who'll fall to these other powerhouse countries, but it's weird. I'm actually on board with it but it's kinda a joke among NHL fans on this board.

And apparently NBC simply passed on the WCOH due to existing scheduling conflicts. So ESPN probably got it by default. I guess they still wanted it but I bet the price was lower then it would've been in a bidding war.

Does anyone know how Amazon referral links work? Like the kind podcasts, and other for-profit entities give to their audience so when the person uses it Amazon kicks back a percentage. I can't find a way to sign up other than for charities.

I had found that, but I thought that was just to get Amazon advertising onto your site. I guess that might be the "bounty" program?

I cannot believe this is the Stanley Cup Finals and the game isn't even on the major/primetime networks. I haven't watched any of the playoffs, primarily because I don't think of it or see it (like, who watches NBC Sports network??). Hockey is a great sport that's really fun to watch and it's sad this league has no idea how to market.

I have barely turned on ESPN since college football season ended. A lot more likely to be on FS1 or NBC Sports.

I think I may do something I never thought I would and something I don't usually suggest others to do, I think I may become a Dallas Cowboys fans. It's a decision that's been on the surface for years, around 8 if I am being honest with myself. I watch a ton of Cowboys games, (watched more Cowboys games than Niners last year since I don't have DirecTV anymore) follow the team, know the history, listen to Dallas sports talk, defending Romo to Cowboys fans for years, other than actually rooting for them and wearing their gear, I am probably a Cowboys fan.

I am born and raised in Texas and am a fan of Texas teams other than the NFL. This change isn't because the Niners are in the position they are in now, this change is something I've battled with for a while. It's not like I am jumping on the ship of a defending Super Bowl champion here. I've been a Niners fan for 20+ years, but I don't hate the Cowboys. I haven't had that type of feeling since I was like 14/15, I am 35 now. It's weird to even consider and I don't even know how I would make the transition. Everyone knows me knows I am a Niners fan. I am so confused and conflicted! Would be very weird, but I think this is the year. To be honest, this change should have happened many moons ago.
